Job summary

RTX is seeking an experienced mechanical design engineer in Portsmouth, RI, to lead the design, development, and documentation of defense system components. You will collaborate with structural, thermal, and electrical teams to solve complex challenges and support fabrication and supplier integration.

The role requires a STEM degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, GD&T proficiency, and US citizenship for DoD clearance.

What You Will Do
  • Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, sub-assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements.
  • Collaborate across multiple disciplines/functions (i.e. structural/thermal analyses and electrical engineering) to solve complex technical challenges in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Support the factory and suppliers with product integration.
  • Participate in design peer reviews, resolving action items, and conduct trade studies to make sound technical decisions.
  • Work with limited supervision and meet commitments for assigned schedule, financial, and technical goals.
Qualifications
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Experience in leading small development efforts and teams with cost and schedule responsibility.
  • Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5), Tolerance Analysis, metal fabrication (machining, sheet metal), assembly joining techniques (fasteners, rivets, inserts).
  • Experience with CAD modeling and Engineering Documentation practices.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • We Prefer Experience in specification, design, development, production and testing of electronics systems.
  • Specific knowledge of packaging electronic equipment to meet physical and environmental constraints is preferred.
  • Experience with technical execution and development of proposal cost and technical volumes.
  • Experience with or certifications to write engineering basis of estimates (BOEs).
  • Ability to support international travel (~30%) to customer sites or suppliers.
  • Experience with PTC CREO and PDM.
  • Experience and certifications in Earned Value Project Management.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve difficult problems while working as part of a cross functional team.
  • Strong communication skillset with ability to articulate, in both oral and written form, to technical, non-technical and management audiences.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
