Job summary

Quantum Computing Inc. in Hoboken, NJ seeks a Senior Hardware Engineer to design, develop, and test advanced hardware systems for quantum photonics platforms.

You will work across hardware, firmware, software, and quantum science teams to drive hardware bring-up and system integration. The role requires deep PCB design skills, experience with ECAD tools, and a strong background in Analog, Power, and Digital electronics.

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 8+ years of experience with BS or 4+ with MS.
  • Proven experience designing PCBs from schematic to layout and review.
  • Experience with at least one ECAD suite; Altium preferred.
  • Familiarity with Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, EMI/EMC.
  • DFM/DFT/DFA best practices in PCB design.
  • Strong fundamentals in Analog, Power, and Digital Electronics.
  • Experience with voltage regulators, LDOs, and SMPS.
  • Experience with op-amps, TIAs, filters, and digital electronics.
  • Proficient in SPICE and access to lab instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Support multiple platforms based on classical and quantum photonics as a senior hardware engineer.
  • Design custom electronics using Altium Designer in collaboration with peers.
  • Evaluate component performance via board- and system-level lab testing (ADCs, DACs, FPGAs, TDCs).
  • Collaborate with firmware, software, and quantum scientists during testing phases.
  • Coordinate with contract manufacturers during manufacturing and implement design changes as needed.
  • Validate performance of custom electronics and document issues from testing.
  • Maintain milestone documentation: theory of operations, manufacturing docs, validation results.
  • Integrate hardware into full system with mechanical, firmware, and FPGA engineers.

Position Description

We are seeking an experienced and talented Senior Hardware Engineer to be part of our hardware development efforts. As a Senior Hardware Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing advanced hardware systems. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the development of several platforms based around classical and quantum photonics as a senior hardware engineer.
  • Work alongside other hardware engineers to design custom electronics using Altium Designer.
  • Evaluate critical component performance via board-level and system-level lab testing (ADCs, DACs, FPGAs, TDCs, etc.)
  • Work with firmware engineers, software engineers, and quantum scientists during various phases of lab testing.
  • Work with contract manufacturers during manufacturing phases to procure custom electronics, addressing and mitigating any necessary design changes along the way.
  • Validate the performance of custom electronics with lab testing. Document any issues uncovered during testing.
  • Maintain documentation expected at milestone events during the entire design cycle (theory of operations, manufacturing documentation, validation testing results, etc.)
  • Integrate hardware into the complete system by working closely with mechanical, firmware, and FPGA engineers.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering (EE or CE) from an accredited university.
  • BS in EE or CE and 8+ years of experience or MS EE or CE with 4+ years of experience.
  • Proven experience designing PCBs from schematic capture, layout design, and review.
  • Experience with at least one ECAD suite (Altium, OrCAD, Allegro, CircuitMaker, or others) Altium is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with PCB design best practices related to Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, and EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Strong foundation in PCB design related to DFM, DFT, and DFA best practices.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals in Analog, Power, and Digital Electronics.
  • Advanced experience with voltage regulators, LDO, and switch mode power supplies (SMPS).
  • Experience with analog electronics design (op-amps, TIAs, filters, etc.)
  • Experience with digital electronics design (Logic Gates, Flip Flops, Microcontrollers, RAM, ROM, Flash, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge of simulation tools such as SPICE.
  • Strong experience with low to medium-speed digital interfaces and protocols (I2C, CAN, UART, SPI, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with board bring-up, debugging, testing, and integration with lab instruments such as: DMMs, Oscilloscopes, Logic Analyzers, and Spectrum Analyzers.
  • Able to code C, C++, MATLAB/Octave, or Python.
  • Working knowledge of Verilog is a huge plus.
  • Able to lift weights up to 50lbs (occasionally).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
Additional Preferred Skills
  • Master of Science (MS) degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering (EE or ECE).
  • Experience designing electronics with complex computing devices such as FPGAs, MCUs, CPUs, DSPs, etc.
  • Experience working with optoelectronics.
  • Experience with high-speed serial protocols (USB, PCIe, Ethernet, etc.)
  • Experience with RF analog, digital, and mixed-signal electronics.
  • Experience designing systems to meet compliance and certification requirements (e.g., CE/FCC).
  • Experience integrating custom ASICs into designs.
  • FPGA/SoC/MCU lab validation with lab equipment.
  • Experience writing low-level firmware (C, Verilog, VHDL, etc.)
  • Experience with manual board prototyping/refurbishing using essential equipment like soldering irons and hot air guns.
