Job summary

The City of Shoreline Public Works Department seeks a Senior Grounds Maintenance Worker to oversee the care and maintenance of parks, medians, rights‑of‑ways, and related landscapes. You will lead crews, plan weekly schedules, and ensure quality work while adhering to IPM and safety standards.

You will supervise equipment use, manage materials, and coordinate with other departments to document activities and support city landscapes, including Green Stormwater Infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead, plan, train, and participate in the work of staff responsible for the care and maintenance of grounds and landscape infrastructure under the City's stewardship, including easements, medians, rights-of-ways, parks, planter beds and strips, bio-swales, and other vegetative assets; discuss work to be performed with supervisors; plan and implement crew assignments; assist staff in troubleshooting and performing the more complex grounds maintenance and repair activities.
• Assign jobs to staff, schedule, evaluate, and plan grounds maintenance and repair; visit sites to investigate problems; create weekly job schedules; create job layout; coordinate and communicate work activities with other departments, divisions, and work sections and the public; and document work activities. Be available to support the crew throughout the day.
• Instructs crew in proper use and maintenance of equipment and tools; coordinates the training and cross‑training of work crews in all maintenance tasks including safety standards.
• Verifies the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
• Utilize a desktop computer, laptop, or tablet to enter and retrieve information within asset management software; generate and close service requests and work orders; record equipment, labor, and material usage; and generate various written documents, spreadsheets, and reports.
• Purchase materials necessary to perform specific jobs, small tools, office supplies, and any other necessary materials; assist supervisor with researching new vehicles and equipment.
• Oversee the use, care, and operation of maintenance equipment such as deck, wing, and push mowers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, loppers, hand and pole pruners, weed eaters, chain saws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms, and other maintenance tools.
• Coordinate vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs; record mileage, report necessary repairs and maintenance, and coordinate maintenance and repairs with outside mechanics.
• Schedule and obtain training materials for monthly safety meetings; perform monthly safety checks. Research safety regulations and ensure all work is performed accordingly.

The Grounds Maintenance Division within the Department is seeking a motivated individual to fill the role of Senior Grounds Maintenance Worker. The Grounds Maintenance Division is responsible for all ornamental landscapes within city rights-of-way and parks, as well as Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). This position schedules the division's day-to-day work and ensures proper Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. It is also responsible for ensuring a safety culture and conducting routine safety meetings.

DEFINITION

Under direction, oversees and participates in the more complex and difficult work of crews engaged in overall care and maintenance of grounds and landscaping infrastructure under the City's stewardship, including easements, medians, rights-of-ways, parks, planter beds and strips, bio-swales, and other vegetative assets; leads and participates in the installation, repair, and maintenance of irrigation systems for landscaped areas; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey level class in the Grounds Maintenance Worker series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including providing lead responsibilities to assigned staff. Employees at this level must be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility. This class is distinguished from the Grounds Maintenance Superintendent in that the Grounds Maintenance Superintendent is the first-line supervisory level.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
