Job Role Summary

The Grounds Maintenance Technician performs essential maintenance tasks to ensure the facilities and grounds are kept in optimal condition. This role includes mowing, trimming, landscaping, snow and ice removal, and other maintenance-related tasks as assigned. The technician also assists with moving office furniture and provides support to the Facilities Operations Coordinator as needed. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment across the properties.
Day in Life:
In this role, your day will involve a dynamic mix of outdoor labor and maintenance. You will perform tasks such as mowing, edging, and clearing debris from the grounds, while also addressing seasonal needs like snow removal. Much of your time will be spent operating various maintenance equipment, collaborating with other team members, and ensuring that the environment adheres to safety standards.

Essential Duties

Grounds Maintenance (80%)

  • Perform seasonal grounds care, including mowing, edging sidewalks, mulching, and maintaining flower beds and landscaping.
  • Remove snow and de-ice surfaces as needed to ensure safety.
  • Keep building surroundings, parking lots, and entrances litter-free to provide a clean environment.
  • Inspect and maintain trash containers, ensuring they are emptied regularly.
  • Set up for special events and assist in routine upkeep as scheduled.
  • Inspect and maintain fences, gates, and walk paths for damage and necessary repairs.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment, including hand tools and light mechanized equipment such as mowers,Skid steer and tractors.
  • Maintain housekeeping functions and clean work areas and company vehicles as needed.

Preventative Maintenance (10%)

  • Conduct routine checks on tools and equipment, performing minor repairs to maximize efficiency.
  • Coordinate with fleet management for necessary maintenance and repairs on equipment.

Collaboration and Team Support (10%)

  • Update the supervisor on task status and collaborate with coworkers to improve workflows and processes.
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced Grounds Maintenance Technicians as required.
  • Attend department meetings and respond effectively to inclement weather conditions.
Associated Job Duties
  • Assist Facilities Engineering with maintenance-related issues.
  • Participate in the implementation of the winter weather response plan.
  • Complete all mandatory training and compliance activities as directed.
  • Train other employees or new hires upon request.
  • Actively engage in process improvements and contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to adapt to changing needs.
Qualifications

Experience:
Grounds Maintenance Experience

  • 5-8 years of increasingly responsible experience in grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Documented success in maintaining and enhancing exterior environments across various property types.

Equipment Operation

  • Proven ability to operate small machinery including mowers, tractors, and snow removal equipment.
  • Familiarity with hand tools and power equipment for maintenance tasks
Licenses/Certifications Required

Required: High school diploma or GED.
Preferred: Relevant certifications in horticulture, landscape management, or facilities maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Facilities & Grounds Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of landscaping principles, including plant care, weed control, and environmental sustainability practices.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems as they relate to outdoor maintenance.

Mechanical Aptitude

  • Strong aptitude for using a variety of tools and machinery safely and effectively.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs on equipment to extend operational lifespan.

Safety & Compliance

  • Thorough understanding of workplace safety protocols and procedures including proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Commitment to adhering to all relevant regulations and codes related to grounds maintenance.

Team Collaboration & Communication

  • Proven capability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting issues and suggesting improvements.

Time Management & Organization

  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time to meet facility maintenance needs.
  • Skilled in maintaining clean and organized work areas.
Working Environment
  • The role requires both indoor and outdoor work across various corporate buildings and grounds in varying weather conditions.
  • Physical demands include ability to lift 50 pounds, walking, standing, climbing, and working in elevated positions.
  • Exposure to environmental factors such as extreme temperatures, dirt, and noise may occur.
