Job description

Rock River Community Clinic is dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services, including medical, dental, and behavioral health care, to individuals regardless of insurance status. Our mission is to deliver compassionate, accessible, and coordinated care to support community well-being.

Overview

The Senior Grants and Financial Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial records, including bookkeeping, accounts payable, grants management, procurement oversight, and general ledger management, while also serving as a proactive partner to the CFO in strengthening internal controls, improving accounting processes, and ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting. This role is hands-on: this position will perform core accounting functions directly while also identifying and correcting errors, recommending process improvements, and helping the organization mature its financial infrastructure as it grows. This is an ideal role for someone who wants ownership over a small organization's full accounting function and enjoys both the detail work and the problem-solving.

Work Arrangement:We require full-time on-site presence during the initial training period. After full understanding of the job duties is achieved, the schedule may transition to a hybrid model.

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own the full general ledger: journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close
  • Process accounts payable, including invoice coding, approval routing, and payment runs
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure proper classification of revenue and expenses (including grant, PPS, and program-restricted funds)
  • Ensure effective grant management through accurate tracking and ongoing monitoring of grant budgets, expenditures, spend-down requirements, reporting deadlines, and compliance obligations
  • Reconcile bank and credit card accounts monthly
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for CFO and CEO review
  • Support preparation of UDS financial reporting, cost reports, and grant financial reports
  • Assist with single audit and annual financial statement audit preparation, including PBC schedules
  • Maintain documentation to support financial program oversight
  • Process Improvement & Internal Controls
  • Identify gaps or recurring errors in current accounting processes and recommend corrective action without being asked
  • Design and document accounting procedures and internal controls appropriate for the organization's size
  • Implement improvements to AP workflows, approval processes, and reconciliation cadence to reduce error rates
  • Partner with the CFO to strengthen segregation of duties and audit-readiness
Cross-Functional Support
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the payment management systems, vendors, and related community partners.
  • Support the CEO and CFO with ad hoc financial reports and board reporting materials
  • Help train or coordinate with administrative staff who touch financial processes (e.g., billing, purchasing, donations)
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to catch and correct errors independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable flagging issues proactively to leadership
