The role oversees close processes, grant accounting, budgeting, and regulatory reporting, reporting to the EVP of Finance. Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement and PTO.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or closely related field.
  • Five (5) years of progressive accounting experience including financial statement prep and audits.
  • Prior supervisory experience leading accounting staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead month, quarter, and year-end closes with accurate financial statements.
  • Maintain general ledger integrity and chart of accounts; review entries and reconciliations.
  • Oversee accounts payable/receivable, payroll-related liabilities, fixed assets and related activities.
  • Prepare analyses and reports for CFO, executives, and Board/Finance Committee.
  • Ensure GAAP compliance and nonprofit accounting practices; monitor grant budgets and reporting.
  • Coordinate audits and external reviews; strengthen internal controls and risk management.
  • Oversee payroll processing, including payroll reports, reconciliations, and tax filings.

Job Summary

The Controller provides day-to-day leadership for the accounting function and directly supervises the accounting team. Reporting to the EVP of Finance, this role is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of Community Clinic’s financial records and reporting. They will oversee the monthly and annual closes, general ledger, reconciliations, grant accounting, audit support, budgeting, payroll accounting, financial controls, and regulatory financial reporting. The Controller develops and supports accounting staff, establishes clear expectations and workflows, and partners with leaders to translate financial information into actionable insight. The role also helps ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), federal grant requirements, and applicable regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Department & Organizational Leadership
    • Directly supervise the accounting team, providing day-to-day leadership, coaching, technical guidance, and accountability for assigned responsibilities.
    • Manage team workload, priorities, and deadlines to ensure timely and accurate completion of accounting, close, reconciliation, reporting, and compliance activities.
    • Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance management, development, and succession planning for accounting staff in partnership with Human Resources and the CFO.
    • Establish clear performance expectations, provide ongoing feedback, and build team capability through cross-training, documentation, and continuous process improvement.
    • Develop standardized procedures, documentation, and reporting tools that improve efficiency, consistency, and transparency.
  • Accounting & Financial Reporting
    • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and ensure accurate, timely financial statements and management reports.
    • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts, including review of journal entries, accruals, allocations, and account reconciliations.
    • Oversee accounting for cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll-related liabilities, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, debt, and other balance sheet accounts.
    • Prepare financial analyses and reporting for the CFO, executive leadership, Board/Finance Committee, and department leaders as requested.
    • Monitor financial trends, variances, and key indicators; investigate significant differences and recommend corrective action.
    • Ensure financial records and processes are maintained in accordance with GAAP and sound nonprofit accounting practices.
  • Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning
    • Coordinate the annual operating and capital budget process in partnership with the CFO and organizational leaders.
    • Support periodic forecasts, cash-flow planning, and budget-to-actual analysis.
    • Assist leaders in understanding financial performance, cost drivers, and the financial impact of operational decisions.
    • Develop and maintain schedules, workpapers, and reporting needed to support strategic and operational financial planning.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Oversee grant accounting, tracking, reporting, and draw activity, including appropriate segregation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
    • Maintain documentation and internal controls to support compliance with grant terms and applicable federal requirements, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), as applicable.
    • Prepare or coordinate financial schedules and supporting documentation for HRSA reporting, UDS-related financial data, and other required federal or state submissions.
    • Support financial compliance related to Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payers, 340B, and other health center programs as applicable to Community Clinic operations.
    • Partner with program and operational leaders to monitor grant budgets, allowable costs, spending deadlines, and reporting requirements.
  • Audit, Internal Controls & Risk Management
    • Coordinate preparation for the annual financial statement audit, Single Audit (when applicable), retirement plan audit, workers’ compensation audit, and other external reviews.
    • Prepare schedules and respond to requests from external auditors, grantors, regulators, and other authorized reviewers.
    • Identify financial control gaps or process risks and partner with the CFO and leaders to improve.
  • Operations Oversight
    • Provide accounting oversight for payroll, payroll liabilities, deductions, benefit-related reconciliations, and related general ledger activity.
    • Review payroll reports and reconciliations for accuracy and completeness; partner with Human Resources and payroll staff/vendors to resolve discrepancies.
    • Support annual payroll-related reporting and reconciliations, including W-2, 1094/1095, retirement plan, and other required reporting as applicable.
    • Ensure appropriate separation of duties and controls across payroll, cash handling, accounts payable, and other finance processes.
Role Specific Essential Competencies
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP, financial accounting, nonprofit accounting, budgeting, internal controls, and financial statement preparation. .
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to identify issues, evaluate options, and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret complex financial reports with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and recurring deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality of financial, payroll, employee, and organizational information.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and able to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to use an automated accounting or ERP system.
  • Working knowledge of health care finance, third-party reimbursement, federal grant accounting, and FQHC financial requirements strongly preferred
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years of progressive accounting experience required, including experience with financial statement preparation, reconciliations, and audit support.
  • Prior supervisory experience required, including demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and hold accounting staff accountable for results.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, or CHFP certification preferred.
  • Health care, FQHC, nonprofit, grant-funded, or government accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with reporting and data-analysis tools preferred.
