Job description

Senior Geologist

Come explore with us! Terracon is seeking a Senior Geologist to join our team.

The location for this position can be based out of any of the following Terracon offices: Lodi, CA - Concord, CA or Sacramento, CA

General Responsibilities:

The Senior Geotechnical Geologist will lead and manage complex geotechnical site investigations by evaluating subsurface soil, rock, and groundwater conditions to inform engineering design and construction recommendations. Oversee the development of geologic models, subsurface profiles, and geologic cross-sections to support analysis of foundation systems, slope stability, and seismic hazards. Direct and supervise field exploration programs including drilling, test pits, CPT, and geophysical investigations, ensuring proper soil and rock logging, sampling, and classification. Interpret geotechnical and hydrogeologic data to assess subsurface variability, groundwater behavior, and potential geologic hazards. Collaborate with geotechnical engineers to develop design parameters and construction recommendations for earthwork, shoring systems, ground improvement, and deep/shallow foundations. Prepare and review technical reports, site investigation plans, and proposals. Provide mentorship and quality assurance for junior geologists and field staff. Project work may include transportation infrastructure, commercial and industrial developments, seismic site response analysis, and environmental remediation support.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  1. Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk. Be familiar with what could go wrong on a project and how to protect the Company.
  2. Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
  3. Responsible for continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor and promote quality standards and practices.
  4. Responsible for providing consistent quality standards on project and proposal delivery.
  5. Senior level Geologist/ Hydrogeologist responsible for leading complex projects requiring innovative investigation techniques.
  6. Supervise the analysis and formation of recommendations in written reports.
  7. Assist in establishing and updating current policies/ procedures for technical projects in field of expertise, to ensure proper interpretation and implementation by subordinate staff.
  8. Provide technical direction and training to less experienced professional staff.
  9. Participate in the development of marketing strategies and presentations of qualifications to clients on projects.
  10. Serves as a Terracon Authorized Project Reviewer.
Requirements:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology or related field and a minimum of 9 years’ related experience.
  2. Master’s degree preferred or PhD preferred.
  3. Understanding and ability to prepare geologic hazard reports for submittal to the California Division of State Architect (DSA), the California Geological Survey (CGS), and the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI).
  4. Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
  5. Certification in field of expertise required.
  6. Professional Geologist (PG) designation required.
  7. Ability to obtain registration as a Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG) in California.
  8. Terracon Authorized Project Reviewer status required.

The expected salary range for this position is listed below. The base range may be adjusted based on the specific location of the applicant. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.

Minimum $117300 - Maximum $181700
