Job Description

Terracon has a fantastic opportunity to join our growing Geotechnical Transportation practice. This group works on transportation projects across Northern and Central California. The position can be based in our East Bay, Lodi, or Sacramento locations.

In this role, you will provide engineering and consulting services for transportation projects and clients. Responsibilities include performing and leading field investigations, engineering analysis, calculations, recommendations, design of plans and specifications, observation, inspection, and report writing. You will review drawings and construction to ensure compliance, prepare proposals and cost estimates, track project progress, and resolve design and construction issues. You will also analyze laboratory or field data for reports, apply engineering principles, and communicate complex issues effectively to clients and teams. Services may involve existing or proposed transportation sector projects.

Examples of work include:

  • Developing site characterization reports detailing geotechnical and geological site conditions to identify risks.
  • Providing geotechnical design recommendations for earthwork, considering planned cuts and fills, for estimating construction quantities and assessing impacts.
  • Recommending foundation designs for bridges and walls, including shallow and deep foundations.

Additional analyses required:

  • External stability (bearing resistance, sliding, overturning, eccentricity)
  • Settlement analyses (short-term, total, rate)
  • Rotational stability
  • Identifying geotechnical risks affecting design or construction.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead safety initiatives and ensure team adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Promote quality monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Conceptualize initial design or investigative approaches for major project phases or oversee engineering work on moderate projects.
  • Plan and coordinate engineering tasks, including complex features.
  • Review projects requiring complex investigation techniques and supervise analysis and report formulation; provide technical review.
  • Lead technical training and make informed decisions on technology issues.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Master's preferred.
  • 8-11 years of experience minimum.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
  • Transportation experience with DOTs is required.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable violations.

The salary range is $131,600 to $204,000, adjusted based on location, qualifications, and experience.
