About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical & Field Engineer to join a growing multidisciplinary engineering team in Indianapolis. This position offers a unique blend of geotechnical engineering, field investigation, construction support, project management, and client-facing responsibilities.

Unlike a traditional office-based geotechnical role, this opportunity provides exposure to every stage of a project lifecycle, from site characterization and subsurface exploration through design, construction observation, and project delivery. The successful candidate will enjoy a varied workload, collaborating closely with engineers, contractors, developers, and public-sector clients on a diverse range of infrastructure, transportation, industrial, commercial, and development projects.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats and wants to remain technically involved while also taking ownership of projects and client relationships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead geotechnical investigations and subsurface exploration programs.
  • Perform and oversee field activities including drilling, sampling, test pits, and construction observation.
  • Review and interpret field and laboratory data.
  • Develop geotechnical recommendations for foundations, earthwork, retaining structures, slope stability, and ground improvement.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, proposals, calculations, and project documentation.
  • Provide construction-phase support and solve field-related geotechnical challenges.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, laboratories, and internal project teams.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, scopes, and deliverables.
  • Mentor junior engineers and field staff.
  • Support business development efforts through proposal preparation and client interaction.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain Indiana PE licensure.
  • 8+ years of geotechnical engineering, field services, construction materials testing, or related experience.
  • Strong understanding of foundations, soil mechanics, site investigations, and construction practices.
  • Experience managing projects and working directly with clients and contractors.
  • Ability to balance office-based engineering work with regular field involvement.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Why Join This Opportunity?
Diverse Responsibilities

Enjoy a role that combines geotechnical engineering, field investigations, construction support, project management, and client engagement.

Major Project Exposure

Work on significant infrastructure, transportation, commercial, and industrial projects with budgets reaching up to $1 billion.

Hybrid Flexibility

Benefit from a flexible work environment that combines office collaboration, remote work, and field-based project involvement.

Career Growth Opportunities

Join a growing team where high performers can take on increasing leadership responsibilities and help shape the future of the business.

High Visibility & Impact

Play a key role throughout the entire project lifecycle, from initial site investigations through final construction.

Collaborative Culture

Work alongside experienced engineers and technical professionals in a team-oriented environment focused on technical excellence and professional development.

Ideal Candidate

This position is well suited to an engineer who enjoys both the technical and practical sides of geotechnical engineering. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between project sites, client meetings, technical analyses, and project leadership responsibilities while maintaining a hands-on approach to engineering and problem solving.
