Job summary

University of California, Berkeley is seeking a lead for its Berkeley Seismological Laboratory data acquisition and quality systems. The role focuses on building and maintaining geophysical data pipelines, monitoring, and real-time data flow in cloud and containerized environments.

The candidate will guide a team, interface with state and federal networks, and coordinate with external partners while advancing research and operational excellence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in geophysics / computer science or equivalent experience.
• Advanced knowledge of complex geophysical data acquisition, monitoring and quality systems.
• Knowledge of geophysical data formats, acquisition and data exchange protocols.
• Experience with state-of-health monitoring tools, alerting solutions including Nagios, Grafana and time-series databases.
• Experience with containerized and cloud environments.
• Experience with complex system troubleshooting in multi-platform environments.
• Ability to interface with senior technical and non-technical management regularly.
• Experience researching and evaluating new technology and solutions.
• Experience managing a small technical team.

Responsibilities

• Plans, designs, integrates, develops, tests, deploys, configures, operates, maintains and documents advanced geophysical data acquisition and quality systems in cloud and containerized environments.
• Monitors performance in real time and drafts operational reports for stakeholders.
• Manages configuration of geophysical stations, data and metadata through SIS, Netbox and NextCloud; tests data before production.
• Leads collaboration with external partners to ensure interoperability and data flow.
• Leads team for data acquisition, monitoring and quality systems and documents architecture and data flows.
• Analyzes potential new solutions for data acquisition and monitoring, coordinating with partners.
