Job summary

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) seeks a Senior Software Engineer II to lead software projects from planning through delivery and support, mentoring engineers and improving genomic testing workflows.

You’ll work with scientists and operations to translate needs into scalable software, APIs, and data-processing services while applying strong engineering practices and secure handling of sensitive information.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS with relevant software experience.
• Leading multi-stakeholder software projects from planning to delivery.
• Ability to apply technical judgment across systems and domains.
• Proficiency in modern languages and object-oriented design.
• Experience with version control, testing, documentation, and collaboration.
• Experience designing APIs, databases, or data systems and production services.
• Strong written and verbal communication with stakeholders.
• Ability to learn new scientific domains quickly and work independently.

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional projects from requirements to production support.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain production-quality software.
• Build software supporting genomic testing workflows and data exchange.
• Clarify needs with stakeholders and translate into designs and plans.
• Contribute to product direction and improve recurring workflows.
• Collaborate with Computational Biology, Clinical Bioinformatics, and others.
• Apply engineering best practices: version control, testing, release, observability.
• Mentor engineers and resolve difficult technical decisions.
• Communicate progress, risks, and delivery expectations clearly.
• Leverage approved AI tools with proper validation and privacy controls.
