Job summary

Alliant Energy is seeking a Senior Generation System Specialist focused on solar and battery energy storage. You will lead technical reviews, models, and vendor documentation to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective integration of assets into the grid.

Mentoring engineers and driving best practices across the portfolio are key parts of the role. You will collaborate with planning, development, and operations teams to optimize asset lifecycle from design through commissioning and long-term

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science, math, engineering, or related area.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in generation, solar, or energy storage.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control and data analysis.
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Understanding of financial management and business practices.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Independently performs complex analysis to determine solutions for problems in generation and storage assets.
  • Monitors multiple systems to ensure safe, reliable operation within regulatory boundaries.
  • Drives development and continuous improvement of plant processes with operations staff.
  • Gathers reliable data and applies measurement methods and calibration procedures.
  • Leads troubleshooting and applies design of experiments and statistical methods.
  • Communicates technical concepts to stakeholders and documents studies and projects.

This role performs complex engineering work using advanced analytical tools and independent judgment to support the full asset lifecycle, from planning and design through construction, commissioning, operation, and long‑term performance optimization. The Senior Engineer helps turn innovative energy technologies into dependable, high‑performing resources that support system reliability and decarbonization goals.Serving as a technical leader for inverter‑based generation, the Senior Engineer provides expert review of technical studies, models, and vendor documentation, ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost‑effective integration of solar and energy storage assets into the grid. This role partners closely across planning, development, and operations teams, acts as a trusted technical authority, and mentors engineers and technical staff; shaping best practices and driving continuous improvement across the power generation portfolio.What you will doIndependently performs work on a variety of complex assignments requiring in-depth analysis to determine appropriate solutions to solve problems.Monitors multiple assigned system(s) or process(es) to assure sustained, safe, and efficient operation of the systems and overall plant within prescribed quality and regulatory boundaries.Coordinates and drives the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of plant processes and systems with generating plant personnel.Assists with gathering accurate, reliable data by determining proper measurement methods, tools, and calibration procedures.Uses control plans and audits to ensure the methodology is standardized and is followed, recommending changes to hardware and settings for assigned system(s).Ensures linkage between plant processes and plant/unit financial and operating goals and regulatory requirements, including stakeholder communications and management.Provides technical assistance as needed, e.g., design of experiments and statistical analysis. Leads plant operation and engineering staff in troubleshooting process or system issues.Interfaces with engineers and plant operations staff to transfer technical knowledge as needed. Facilitates process improvement teams as needed.Recommends and develops justification for capital or maintenance projects to restore or improve performance of assigned systems.Manages coordination of plant operation and engineering staff during plant evaluation and testing of new products to determine the effect of changes on plant equipment and system performance. Identifies test methods and establishes standards for reporting.Explains technical problems to internal stakeholders and accurately prepares detailed documents such as technical studies and project documentation for future reference.Manages project budgets, including processes accruals, and communicates anticipated changes in the budget. Applies FIN 102 requirements when executing requisitions, receipts, and related project tasks.Understands various corporate financial statements and can differentiate how project implementation and property unit catalog (PUC) citations will impact the rate payer versus the shareholder, including providing input to PUC modifications as appropriate.Serves as fleetwide subject matter expert on assigned issues or components, communicating best practices and lessons learned across Generation facilities.Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy’s Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.Education RequirementsBachelor's Degree Emphasis in science, math, business, or related area PreferredRequired Experience8 years of relevant experiencePreferred ExperienceOther RequirementsMust possess a valid driver’s license.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledgeable in the application and theory of Statistical Process Control and data collection and analysis.Able to use advanced mathematical concepts (data distribution, complex equations, sampling plans, control charts, correlation, etc.)Familiar with financial management and business practices.Practical knowledge of engineering concepts and disciplines.Must possess solid interpersonal skills including team facilitation and negotiation.Working knowledge of Physics and Chemistry.Demonstrated knowledge of plant processes, products and equipment.
