Qualifications

Commonwealth Savers, formerly Virginia529, is an independent state agency that offers savings and investment programs to meet future financial goals, while providing meaningful work to our diverse and collaborative team. Our name change to Commonwealth Savers, reflects our expanded mission to empower individuals on their entire financial journey through education, disability, and retirement savings programs. Commonwealth Savers manages the largest 529 and independent ABLE plans in the nation, helping people save for higher education and disability related expenses, and now manages the state’s private retirement program, RetirePathVA, bringing retirement savings to those who do not have employer-provided options.

Our growing General Accounting Team is seeking a Senior General Ledger Accountant to contribute advanced expertise in general ledger accounting and reconciliation processes. This position performs and reviews accounting activities related to general ledger accounts, payments, financial statements, budgeting, and financial analysis. The role analyzes receipts, disbursements, and journal entries within the accounting system and monitors, reconciles, and reports on records, transactions, and accounts. This position processes program redeposits, reversals, and settlement corrections, and develops and performs highly complex general ledger reconciliations.

Perform all aspects of general ledger accounting including recording, processing, summarizing, reconciling, and reporting accounting transactions and data, and assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes

Develop highly complex financial reconciliations, analyze and communicate results to management, and prepare related schedules and supporting documentation used in internal and external reporting including the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report

Process, program redeposits, reversals, and settlement corrections in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures

Analyze and evaluate data recorded in various financial systems including financial and investment data reported by the agency’s financial institutions and master custodian, and prepare internal and external agency financial reports and related financial analysis

Monitor evolving accounting guidance and work with the General Accounting Team and Finance management to interpret and implement Governmental Accounting Standards Board statements and other applicable accounting standards and practices

Consult and train staff on reporting, reconciliation, and analysis tools as needed and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support compliance with accounting standards, processes, procedures, and policies

Successful candidates will have:

Seven or more years of relevant work experience in governmental accounting, finance, or related field, with demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), budget practices, financial reporting, and general business processes; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; CPA preferred

Experience with the Commonwealth’s accounting procedures and policies preferred

Ability to read, compile, analyze and accurately interpret complex accounting and financial records and statements

Ability to identify and define problems, collect and reconfigure data, establish facts, develop and communicate options and draw valid conclusions

Demonstrated critical thinking, decision making and analytical ability with a strong attention to detail and ability to meet critical deadlines

Demonstrated master level proficiency with Microsoft Excel; strong skills in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint

Proficiency with financial systems and business accounting software (general ledger, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reporting); Frontier Reconciliation Software is a plus

Knowledge of SQL Queries, Business Objects, and Tableau Reporting Software preferred

Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and persuasively, orally and in writing

Ability to build rapport and collaborate with coworkers, other state government employees and the financial community

This position follows a hybrid work schedule with a minimum of two days on-site each week

Typical office environment with considerable time in a sitting, stationary position

Constantly operate a computer and other office equipment including typing and keying

Frequently communicate with team members and third-party business partners; must be able to exchange accurate information accordingly
