Job summary

Citizens, Inc. is hiring an experienced General Accounting Manager in Austin, TX to lead general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, and treasury support. The role requires strong GAAP knowledge, internal controls, and SOX documentation in a growing public company environment.

The position reports to the VP of Accounting and is onsite at our Austin corporate headquarters. Candidates should bring leadership capability, strategic thinking, and a continuous improvement mindset to

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years leading staff.
• Strong Excel skills and proficiency with office software.
• Demonstrated leadership, analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management abilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee month-end close activities with timely reporting.
• Review and approve journal entries, accruals, allocations, and reclassifications.
• Review bank and balance sheet reconciliations and address reconciling items.
• Maintain accounting policies and internal controls documentation for GAAP and SOX.
• Maintain SOX documentation and ensure audit readiness.
• Oversee unclaimed property reporting and regulatory compliance.
• Identify process improvements and lead control-related projects.
• Coach and develop accounting staff and manage performance expectations.
• Coordinate internal and external audits and respond to inquiries.
