Job summary

Figure in San Jose, CA is hiring a Senior Gear Design Engineer to own end-to-end gear and transmission design for our humanoid robot’s hands. You’ll take gear trains from sizing through validation and into mass manufacturing, defining how our robot grasps and manipulates the world.

You will work with CATIA, KISSsoft, and ASME Y14.5 to ensure high packaging efficiency and durability, while collaborating across actuator, structures, EE, and manufacturing teams to push the program forward.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience designing gears and geared transmissions.
• Proficiency in KISSsoft for gear rating, contact analysis, and micro-geometry optimization.
• Proficiency in CATIA for complex geometry and large assemblies.
• Working knowledge of AGMA/ISO gear rating standards, gear metrology, and tolerancing.
• Experience with gear manufacturing processes and supplier development.

Responsibilities

• Own gear design end-to-end: sizing, geometry, rating, life analysis, prototyping, validation, and ramp to mass production.
• Perform gear sizing and analysis to meet efficiency, durability, backlash, and NVH targets.
• Design gears, shafts, and transmission assemblies in 3D CAD satisfying high packaging and durability needs.
• Define gear manufacturing strategy and drive supplier development from first articles to high-volume production.
• Create 2D drawings with data tables and GD&T per ASME Y14.5; define inspection and metrology plans.
• Build and run test rigs; correlate test data to analytical models.
• Collaborate with actuator, structures, EE, and manufacturing teams to identify risks and drive decisions.

Education

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or similar field
