Job summary

The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities seeks a qualified Engineer, Principal for the Gas Division to oversee pipeline engineering, compliance, operation and maintenance of Richmond Gas Works facilities. The role includes reviewing designs, developing bid proposals, managing budgets, and ensuring regulatory compliance across natural gas projects.

A bachelor’s degree in engineering and five years of experience are required; some assignments require a Virginia driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of plastic and steel pipeline design standards, corrosion and CFR 192 requirements.
• Knowledge of pressure regulation and meter set design.
• Procurement laws for design consultants and contracts; project management.
• Reading and interpreting GIS maps and AutoCAD plans; hydraulic modeling.
• Advanced math including geometry, calculus, and statistics.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; strong communication and supervisory abilities.

Responsibilities

• Manage the engineering design process, including plans and permits.
• Perform engineering activities for design, operation and maintenance of natural gas facilities.
• Assist with bid proposals, specifications and material lists.
• Develop and update plans, manuals, and compliance records.
• Develop and monitor budgets and present budget recommendations.
