Job summary

Liberty, a key operating unit in Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp., seeks a Senior Gas Distribution Engineer to design, upgrade, and expand the natural gas distribution system serving communities. You will oversee projects from scope development through construction closeout and collaborate with operations, regulators, and contractors.

You will guide safety, reliability, and cost-effective service while advancing infrastructure modernization and long-term planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or another engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in natural gas distribution, utility engineering, infrastructure design, project management, or related engineering work.
  • Ability to design and support natural gas infrastructure, including mains, service lines, regulators, meters, and related facilities.
  • Strong project management skills, including scope development, cost estimating, scheduling, budgeting, procurement, and construction support.
  • Experience working with CAD, GIS, Microsoft Office, or similar engineering and business applications.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, contractors, regulatory agencies, municipalities, and internal stakeholders.
  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel locally as needed.

As a Senior Gas Distribution Engineer at Liberty, you'll play a critical role in designing, upgrading, and expanding the natural gas distribution system that serves our communities. You'll combine engineering expertise with project leadership responsibilities, overseeing projects from initial scope development and cost estimating through construction and final closeout.

Accountabilities
  • Evaluates design requests, collaborates with stakeholders to understand requirements, and provides cost effective designs that coply with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicates timely and effectively with stakeholders regarding design and sizing requests.
  • Provides input on standard designs and standard equipment selection.
  • Develops scopes of work, materials requirements, and cost estimates; requisitions materials and secures necessary contracts and permits; oversees project execution; and completes project closeout documents.
  • Maintains and reports project schedules and forecasts to ensure completion of projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Communicates timely and effectively with stakeholders regarding project status.
  • Receives notices regarding proposed public works projects, performs drawing reviews for potential conflicts with natural gas infrastructure, and assists the department head with responding to the appropriate agencies.
  • Performs design and project management functions as required to mitigate conflicts.
  • Reports project schedules and forecasts based on agency provided information.
  • Assists department head with tracking and reporting on department and project metrics.
  • Participates in development and updating of design and project management related documents.
  • Participates in integrity management and compliance related activities as required.
