Job summary

American Family Insurance is seeking a Full Stack Engineer to lead the AI Platform team in Madison, WI, guiding a group of engineers to deliver scalable AI services and tooling. The role blends hands-on development with architectural leadership in a hybrid office/home setting.

You will work with Python-based AI systems, cloud infrastructure, APIs, and CI/CD practices to drive reliable AI-enabled outcomes across departments, with relocation support and a competitive compensation range.

Qualifications

• Deep software engineering fundamentals across large codebases and enterprise SDLC.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs in production: RAG, agents, evaluation, prompt engineering, or fine-tuning.
• Strong system design skills focused on scalability, failure modes, and maintainability.
• Extensive experience with GCP Vertex AI, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, and NoSQL databases (Firestore/Bigtable).
• Applied knowledge of Kubernetes for container orchestration and workload management.
• Proven ability to deliver shipped AI/ML products, not just notebooks or prototypes.
• Expert-level Python programming in a software context.
• Experience designing and building APIs for internal/external use.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Docker) and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Partner with leaders to translate business needs into scalable AI solutions.
• Architect and build enterprise AI platform capabilities for broad adoption.
• Establish reusable patterns and shared services including LLM infrastructure and CI/CD tooling.
• Set standards for architecture, code quality, testing, deployment and security.
• Modernize existing AI/ML solutions for performance, scalability and value.
• Collaborate across teams to align priorities and ensure delivery of platform capabilities.
• Champion platform reliability, observability, and operational readiness.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, standards and governance.
