About the Team/Role

The Core Engineering team at WEX is responsible for building the enterprise-grade foundation for scalable and secure customer-facing applications across the company. Our core mission is to empower product development teams to rapidly integrate intuitive, high-performance, and accessible user interfaces into customer-facing applications in highly regulated industries such as payments and healthcare.

We are seeking a Senior Frontend Application Engineer with specialized expertise in building robust, modern web interfaces and user experiences. The ideal candidate will be a technical leader who combines deep knowledge of frontend frameworks, UI/UX best practices, and performance optimization with a strong foundation in cloud infrastructure and DevOps principles. This role requires a unique blend of skills to navigate the complexities of delivering trusted, secure, and highly compliant user experiences while adhering to stringent security and accessibility standards.

How you'll make an impact
  • Be a highly motivated engineer who loves working on small, highly performing teams.
  • Be collaborative, a solid communicator, and work well with your team and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical authority on high-performing teams, leading the design and implementation of scalable, production-grade frontend solutions.
  • Architect and develop intuitive, responsive, and accessible user interfaces for WEX's core financial and healthcare products.
  • Design and implement robust testing frameworks for frontend applications, ensuring usability, cross-browser compatibility, and regulatory compliance (e.g., WCAG).
  • Lead the integration of frontend components with backend APIs and services by collaborating with backend engineering, product, and UX/UI design teams.
  • Engineer and maintain high-performance, maintainable codebases for web applications, ensuring optimal load times, responsiveness, and user experience.
  • Develop and automate CI/CD pipelines to streamline the lifecycle of frontend applications, from development and testing to deployment and monitoring.
  • Apply advanced observability and monitoring practices to frontend applications to guarantee the robustness, performance, and traceability of all deployed user interfaces.
  • Champion and implement advanced DevOps and frontend architecture principles, balancing rapid innovation with the rigorous compliance and security standards required for the financial and healthcare sectors.
Experience you'll bring
  • A Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related quantitative field and 3+ years of professional experience in frontend application development; OR a Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in the same fields, and 5+ years of progressive, post-baccalaureate professional experience in frontend application development. A primary focus on JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web technologies is required.
  • 3+ years of specialized, hands-on experience building, deploying, and maintaining complex web applications in large-scale production environments.
  • Expert-level proficiency with modern JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, and popular frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js - React preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining complex, high-performance user interfaces, state management patterns (e.g., Redux, Zustand), and integrating with RESTful/GraphQL APIs.
  • Strong, demonstrable knowledge of cloud services (AWS, Azure, or GCP) for hosting and deploying web applications (e.g., S3, CloudFront, Amplify, Vercel) and expert-level proficiency in infrastructure-as-code frameworks (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) for frontend infrastructure.
  • Proven experience applying advanced DevOps principles to frontend development, including containerization (Docker for build environments), CI/CD automation, bundle optimization, and production monitoring (e.g., RUM, Lighthouse).
  • Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex frontend architecture and UI/UX solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
