Job summary

WHOOP, based in Boston, MA, seeks a Principal AI Researcher for its Foundation AI team to build foundation models that fuse wearable sensor data, text, biomarkers, and self-reported inputs into health-enhancing experiences.

You will own the technical execution of foundation modeling workstreams and shape platform and infrastructure choices, driving research bets from thesis to production while collaborating with product and engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) or equivalent depth.
• Owned technical direction for a significant area and made architectural decisions with lasting impact.
• Ability to take ambiguous, high-risk research directions to production impact and discontinue those that fail.
• Deep expertise in modern deep learning (transformers, state space models), multimodal training, self-supervised and representation learning, RL-based post-training (PPO/DPO/GRPO), and large-scale distributed training.
• Experience as a technical authority that multiplies team output.
• Excellent communication and the ability to influence both engineering and senior leadership.
• Publications and community-building at top-tier ML venues.
• Passion for WHOOP's mission to improve human performance and healthspan.

Responsibilities

• Set the architectural direction for large-scale models spanning wearable sensor data, text, biomarkers, and behavioral signals, and own the highest-stakes design decisions.
• Identify research bets in self-supervised and representation learning and drive them from thesis to production capability.
• Contribute to the broader AI strategy and standards at WHOOP, shaping platform, compute, and infrastructure choices.
• Partner across research, product, and engineering to connect breakthroughs to product and business outcomes.
• Raise the technical bar across the team: grow staff and senior engineers, strengthen design-review and evaluation norms.
• Represent WHOOP's technical work externally for recruiting, partnerships, and visibility.
