Job summary

Department of Forensic Science seeks a Forensic Scientist Section Supervisor for the Western Laboratory to lead bench staff, ensure QA/QC, and manage the Forensic Biology section.

The role requires a strong background in DNA analysis, accreditation standards, and the ability to present expert testimony. Occasional travel is required, and the incumbent will coordinate complex casework with law enforcement agencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in biology, chemistry, or forensic science.
• Nine credit hours in biology/chemistry with basics of DNA analysis and statistics.
• ISO/IEC 17025 accredited DNA PCR STR training for casework.
• Significant experience as a DNA casework analyst in an accredited lab.
• Knowledge of FBI QA standards, ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ANAB criteria.
• Ability to testify in court through experience/training.
• Knowledge of lab safety and QA/QC procedures.
• Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation.
• Pass a background investigation.

Responsibilities

• Lead bench-level and supervisory staff in the Western Laboratory.
• Ensure accreditation standards, state requirements, and policies.
• Manage backlog and workload; monitor productivity.
• Oversee case priorities and validation studies; perform performance checks.
• Coordinate inter‑laboratory transfers; implement QA/QC procedures.
• Provide staff training; oversee section operations for high-quality work.
• Perform comprehensive analyses on evidence and prepare court-ready reports.
• Access CODIS for data entry and evaluation of matches.
• Prepare court exhibits and provide expert testimony as needed.
• Occasional overnight travel and own transportation required.
