Workdays/Hours: Monday - Friday
6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.

This position provides repair and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and related systems. Responsibilities include diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining construction equipment, trucks, fire apparatus, and other equipment. Tasks involve mechanical repairs, diesel repairs, hydraulic repairs, engine overhauls, transmission rebuilds, welding, fabricating parts, operating equipment, inspections, preventative maintenance, data entry, and emergency calls.

Incumbents assigned to fire equipment perform specialized diagnostics and repairs on fire apparatus, including preventative maintenance, welding, electrical troubleshooting, and on-call support for the fire department.

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain construction and automotive equipment, trucks, police and fire apparatus, and other equipment; perform mechanical, diesel, and hydraulic repairs; conduct preventative maintenance.
  • Dismantle, overhaul, repair, and reassemble engines; rebuild transmissions; maintain drivetrains, carburetors, differentials, pumps, and troubleshoot electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform complex diagnostics using computer systems; test and inspect equipment; fabricate parts as needed.
  • Coordinate with vendors and agencies for service scheduling, technical assistance, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and emergency calls; troubleshoot complex maintenance issues.
  • Manage inventory, parts, supplies, and procurement processes.
  • Maintain accurate records, work orders, and databases related to maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform skilled maintenance on diverse vehicles and systems, including electrical and hydraulic repairs.
  • Weld and fabricate equipment and tools as needed.
  • Utilize diagnostic software and ensure safety compliance.
  • Document all maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in auto mechanics/repair, diesel tech, or related field with 3 years of experience, or high school diploma with 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a clean record.
  • North Carolina Inspection and/or Emissions License or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • EPA 609 Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Forklift Operator's License or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASE certification.
  • NC State Inspectors License (safety/OBD2) within 1 year.
  • Welding experience.
  • Experience with OEM diagnostic tools and software.
  • Three years of heavy-duty truck or automotive experience.
  • Willingness to learn and apply new skills.
  • Flexibility to assist with shop operations, facility maintenance, storm water, and fuel system maintenance.
  • Ability to complete safety and job-related training.

Additional Notes: This position is critical to emergency operations and requires reporting to work during emergencies or disasters.
