Job summary

System One is seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer in Taunton, MA for a contract role spanning 2+ years. You will design bare-metal firmware in C for ARM Cortex-M, build low-level drivers, and optimize for performance and power while collaborating with hardware and product teams.

Applicants should have a DoD Secret clearance, US citizenship, and 8+ years of relevant experience (or 6+ with a Master's). Experience with autonomous undersea systems is a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering plus 8 years of relevant experience or Master's degree plus 6 years.
• U.S. citizenship and DoD Secret security clearance at time of hire.
• Experience designing firmware for autonomous undersea systems or similar complex projects.
• Strong collaboration and proven leadership of design teams.
• Experience applying R&D processes and AI for continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement bare-metal firmware in C for ARM Cortex-M and other microcontroller architectures.
• Develop drivers and low-level interfaces for peripherals including SPI, I2C, UART, GPIO, ADC, PWM, and timer modules.
• Profile and optimize code for performance, power consumption, and memory constraints.
• Work closely with hardware engineers, systems architects, and product teams to translate requirements into firmware solutions.
• Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers (SWD, JTAG), and embedded testing frameworks to validate firmware functionality.

Compensation: $64.00 - $74.00/hr
Clearance Required: Secret

Responsibilities

• Design and implement bare-metal firmware in C for ARM Cortex-M and other microcontroller architectures
• Develop drivers and low-level interfaces for peripherals including SPI, I2C, UART, GPIO, ADC, PWM, and timer modules

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related Science, Engineering or Mathematics field, plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
• Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required at time of hire; U.S. citizenship is mandatory due to the nature of work
• Experience with designing and implementing firmware for autonomous undersea systems or similar complex projects
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a proven ability to lead design teams
• Knowledge of R&D processes, with a focus on innovation and applying AI for continuous improvement
