Job summary

City of Bonner Springs is seeking a Fire Prevention Inspector to join the Fire Department at the Bonner Springs Fire Station, KS. This full-time position performs certified inspections, code compliance, plan reviews, and public safety education while coordinating with multiple city agencies.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED with at least 5 years in fire service leadership, fire prevention, or related fields; professional certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and at least 5 years in fire service leadership, fire prevention, building inspection, or code enforcement.
• Post-secondary coursework or a degree in fire science, fire protection, public safety, or related field preferred.
• Fire Inspector Certification: Fire Inspector I & II; Plans Review certification preferred.
• State or regional fire inspection certifications required or designated by the City.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine and complaint-based fire and life safety inspections of commercial buildings, public facilities, multifamily occupancies, and other properties subject to codes.
• Identify hazards and code violations; explain corrective measures, issue reports and notices, and conduct follow-up inspections.
• Interpret and apply adopted fire codes, city ordinances, and life safety standards; provide technical guidance to owners, contractors, and the public.
• Review construction and renovation plans for fire safety compliance in coordination with the Building Official and city staff.
• Coordinate with Planning, Building Inspections, Public Works, Police, and others on development projects and events.
• Assist with fire prevention permit reviews and inspections for regulated activities and special events.
• Develop and deliver fire safety education and outreach to schools, businesses, residents, and groups.
• Provide guidance on emergency preparedness, evacuation planning, and risk reduction.
• Maintain inspection records and documentation; prepare activity reports and identify recurring hazards.
• Respond to citizen questions/complaints and resolve issues professionally and promptly.
• Participate in required training and pursue relevant certifications; assist with on-call coverage.
