The Life & Disability Senior Financial Underwriter is responsible for computing both new business and renewal rates for moderate to complex Group Life and Disability (Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability) coverages for all case sizes, using experience and manual rates. Independent review of client and competitor information, as well as ability to problem solve, and effectively negotiate with Sales and other areas of Humana is critical. The Senior Financial Underwriter will also be expected to be a resource and mentor to junior underwriters.

The Senior Financial Underwriter prepares a variety of financial exhibits and reports for large accounts and provides rationale and support to other areas within the organization and to clients regarding rate computations and financial activity.

Responsibilities
  • Recommends and communicates products, and competitive pricing to meet customer requirements.
  • Reviews contract and certificates, working with Product and Compliance areas to evaluate ability to match plans for takeover.
  • Negotiates with Sales and Account Management as needed in preparing offers for new and existing business. May connect with agents/brokers and clients as needed, to resolve risk, plan and rating concerns.
  • Responsible for administrative processing of cases, utilizing various UW tools, systems and databases to complete evaluations, and various Evidence of Insurability reviews.
  • Effective documentation of UW decisions.
  • Demonstrates strong time, organizational and desk management.
  • Provides mentoring/coaching in development of technical skills of others, supporting the growth of the team. Conducts training for sales and/or underwriting staff as needed.
  • Participates in project work to develop or improve underwriting processes.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience with Employer Group Life and Disability underwriting
  • Ability to prioritize and efficiently handle multiple work items and due dates
  • Command of Underwriting tools and systems
  • Ability to challenge status-quo and produce alternatives to support goals and growth
  • Comprehensive understanding of risk pool management, manual rating, experience rating and thorough knowledge of Group Insurance products/processes
  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills and ability to apply them to complex cases and issues
  • Ability to make decisions, solve problems and meet challenges in completing work
  • Strong negotiation and relationship building skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Experience underwriting rates for complex accounts
  • Experience analyzing a wide variety of health or claims related data
  • Industry Related course work is preferred but not required
  • Prior experience working with Reinsurers
Additional Information

Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.

$78,400 - $107,800 per year

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
