We are currently retained on behalf of a leading commodities trading firm seeking an experienced FFA Freight Derivatives Trader to join their growing global shipping and derivatives trading desk in the NY Metro Area (New York, Connecticut, New Jersey).

Collaborating with global teams, this is a newly created and highly commercial role focused on building and managing risk across freight forward agreements (FFA), primarily across dry bulk and/or tanker markets.

Key Responsibilities:

• Execute proprietary trading strategies in FFA markets (dry bulk and/or tanker)
• Manage freight exposure linked to underlying physical shipping and commodity trading activities
• Develop and maintain relationships with ship owners, charterers, brokers, and counterparties
• Monitor global freight markets, supply-demand fundamentals, and key macro drivers
• Collaborate closely with physical commodity traders, chartering teams, and risk managers to optimize overall exposure and profitability
• Identify and capitalize on dislocations in the forward freight curve and volatility structure
• Ensure compliance with internal risk limits, regulatory frameworks, and reporting obligations

Qualifications:

• 15-20+ years proven experience trading freight derivatives (FFA) in dry bulk and/or tanker markets
• Strong market relationships with brokers, charterers, and key counterparties
• Deep understanding of shipping markets, vessel classes, and freight market fundamentals
• Ability to manage significant market risk and exposure across volatile forward curves
• Highly analytical, commercially minded, and decisive under pressure
• Excellent communication skills and collaborative approach with broader trading and risk teams
• Highly desirable: experience working within a physical trading house, oil major, or major ship operator a strong advantage
• Broad commodity market knowledge, including energy commodities considered a plus
