Job summary

Sundt Construction in Tempe, Arizona, is looking for a Senior Estimator to manage preconstruction efforts with minimal oversight. The successful candidate will prepare detailed take-offs, develop cost estimates, and coordinate with the design team and project owners.

Ideal candidates will have extensive experience in estimating, particularly in earthwork, paving, and underground utilities. Strong knowledge of HCSS estimating tools and the ability to lead junior estimators is required. Competitive benefits include health coverage and a 401K plan.

Job description

Job Summary

The Senior Estimator operates with minimal oversight on preconstruction teams, frequently serving as the principal point of contact with the design team and the owner. Senior estimators are capable of leading all types of project delivery methods and have demonstrated competence in basic and advanced estimating functions. Desired estimating disciplines include earthwork, paving, underground utilities, and structures on transit, civil infrastructure, and highway projects. Successful candidates will prepare detailed take-offs, solicit quotes, develop cost estimates, and close out bids.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advanced level HCSS knowledge of estimate entry and quote system tools.
  • Estimate all scopes related to their discipline area of expertise.
  • Perform detailed quantity take-offs on bid items and materials to develop all-inclusive cost estimates.
  • Estimate unit costs by analyzing crew composition, production rates, and equipment selection.
  • Participate in detailed reviews, providing thorough explanation of the estimate.
  • Use relevant cost history databases to verify production rates.
  • Prepare supplier bid packages to ensure that self‑performed work has competitive material quotes.
  • Coordinate junior estimators and interns with takeoff and vendor solicitation processes.
  • Assist in obtaining firm quotes for material suppliers, equipment and subcontractors.
Discipline Areas
  • Mass Earthwork and Grading
    • Geotechnical report review – dewatering, blasting, and ripping requirements.
    • Earthwork flow, mass haul diagrams, project phasing.
    • Scraper, dozer, truck, loader, and excavator productions.
  • Aggregates, PCCP Paving, Asphalt Paving
    • Identification of quarries and pits suitable for project use.
    • Production of aggregate, asphalt, and concrete through various methods.
    • Understanding of incentives, penalties, and PWLs.
  • Underground Utilities
    • Trench protection and shoring.
    • Excavator methods and equipment selection.
    • Quantification of mechanical assemblies such as valves and fire hydrants.
    • Analysis and pricing of backfill methods and materials.
  • Bridges and Structures
    • Falsework and formwork systems.
    • Post‑tensioning, precast yards, and foundations.
    • Crane selection, erection of precast elements and cast‑in‑place techniques.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Proficient use of all Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • LEED accreditation and DBIA certification preferred, or willingness to obtain.
  • Four‑year engineering degree or equivalent technical training/experience.
  • Ten or more years of estimating experience.
  • Successful history executing projects as the prime point of contact with minimal oversight.
  • Project experience in one or more key market sectors identified by the business unit.
Physical Requirements

Occasionally climbing stairs, ladders, etc.; interacting with people frequently during a shift; lifting, pushing or pulling objects occasionally; sitting, standing or walking short distances for up to the entire shift; reaching above shoulder heights and below the waist frequently; using telephone, computer, email or other electronic devices occasionally; stooping, kneeling or bending occasionally; handling objects frequently; wearing personal protective equipment; complying with all safety standards and procedures.
