Job summary

City of Akron in Ohio is seeking an Equipment Operator II to operate a range of automotive and heavy equipment in construction and maintenance tasks across city streets and facilities.

You will perform preventive maintenance, read maps for predetermined routes, and may lead a work crew. A valid Ohio CDL is required and at least two years of paid equipment operation experience.

The role demands safe operation, weather resilience, and effective communication with supervisors and the public.

Qualifications

• Two years of paid experience in the skilled operation of automotive and construction equipment.
• Possession of a valid State of Ohio commercial driver's license (class and endorsements as required).
• Ability to read and write and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to lead work crew activities.
• Knowledge of traffic laws and safe operation around work crews.

Responsibilities

• Collect trash and recyclables from City containers using a packer truck with automated arm.
• Operate bulldozer and crawler loader for piling sludge, clearing ground, backfilling, and tree removal.
• Operate various cranes for loading/unloading and ditching work.
• Drive tractors and heavy trucks for transporting fill materials.
• Operate graders, paving machines, backhoes, and other equipment for road and canal maintenance.
• Inspect equipment daily, perform preventative maintenance, report major needs.
• Read maps to complete predetermined sweeping routes and ice/snow routes during emergencies.
