A Brief Overview

We are looking for a highly capable Senior Environmental Technical Claims Specialist to help us on a temporary assignment through 31 August 2025 and work from anywhere in the United States. If this assignment is filled in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Richmond (VA), or San Antonio, the assignment can be considered temp-to-hire. This individual will report to a manager based in New York City and focus on adjudicating first and third-party commercial environmental claims (mostly complex storage tank claims), contributing to providing superb results for our clients. As this is a temporary assignment, only government-mandated benefits will be provided.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the role are:

• Adjudicate commercial environmental claims at the highest authority limits on assignments reflecting the highest degree of technical complexity, potentially with major impact on departmental results, under limited oversight.
• Conduct detailed information gathering, analysis, and investigation to find solutions to numerous and undefined issues.
• Report to senior management and underwriters on claims trends and developments.
• Analyze claims forms, policies, endorsements, client instructions, and other records to determine policy coverage.
• Investigate claims promptly and thoroughly, including interviewing involved parties.
• Manage claims in litigation.
• Manage diary tasks to ensure cases move to the best financial outcome and are resolved timely.
• Set claim reserves considering policy wording impacts.
• Identify loss drivers and claims trends to reduce claims frequency and severity through data analysis and improved claim management.
• Coordinate expertise resources for case resolution.
• Prepare reports for file documentation.
• Apply creative solutions for optimal financial outcomes.
• Negotiate effectively to provide cost-effective solutions within own limits using various negotiation styles.
• Process mail and prioritize workload.
• Communicate via telephone and written correspondence with various parties.
• Demonstrate a passion for strong claim management.

Core qualifications and requirements:

• Good business acumen understanding how insurance companies operate and profit, and how this role impacts Argo and clients.
• Deep knowledge of commercial environmental claims, typically acquired through:
  • A minimum of seven years adjudicating such claims with exposure of $100,000 or more.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required; J.D. preferred. Alternatively, two insurance designations or four additional years of related experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Licensed Claims Examiner (by state) or ability to obtain license within 120 days.

The salary range varies by location, with specific ranges provided for Colorado, California, New York City, and San Francisco areas, based on experience and regional labor costs.

Physical Demands: Standard office environment, primarily PC-based work.
