Overview

We are looking for a highly capable Senior Environmental Technical Claims Specialist to join our team and work from any one of the following offices: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Omaha, Richmond (VA), Rockwood (PA), or San Antonio, or remotely from home in the continental United States. This role reports to a manager in New York City and focuses on adjudicating first and third party commercial environmental claims (mostly complex storage tank claims) and contributing to superb results for our clients.

Responsibilities
  • Adjudicate commercial environmental claims at high authority limits with a focus on technically complex matters, potentially impacting departmental results.
  • Conduct detailed information gathering, analysis and investigation to resolve numerous and undefined issues.
  • Report to senior management and underwriters on claims trends and developments.
  • Analyze claims forms, policies and endorsements, client instructions, and other records to determine policy coverage.
  • Investigate claims promptly and thorougly, including interviewing involved parties.
  • Manage claims in litigation and maintain diary to ensure timely and favorable resolutions.
  • Set claim reserves considering how different policy wordings affect reserving.
  • Identify loss drivers and trends through data analysis to reduce claims frequency and severity.
  • Coordinate assignment of expert resources to assist in case resolution.
  • Prepare reports for file documentation and apply creative solutions for optimal financial outcomes.
  • Negotiate in a timely and effective manner to provide cost-effective solutions within authority.
  • Process mail and prioritize workload; manage telephone and written communications with insureds, claimants, and others.
  • Demonstrate passionate claim management and strong execution to achieve results.
Qualifications
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of how an insurance company operates and profits from claims handling.
  • Extensive experience adjudicating commercial environmental claims (minimum seven years) with exposure of $100,000 or more.
  • Bachelor's degree required; J.D. preferred. Two or more insurance designations or four additional years of related experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • Licensed Claims Examiner (or ability to obtain license in required jurisdictions within 120 days).
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills; strong evaluation and strategic thinking.
  • Strong negotiation skills with a proactive, solutions-focused approach.
  • Customer-focused with effective time management and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to articulate financial value at multiple levels inside client organizations (potentially including C-suite).
  • Discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance; resilience and ethical conduct.
  • Results-driven with a focus on execution; adaptable to change and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with clients and peers; strong listening and questioning techniques for information gathering.
  • Familiarity with dispute resolution mechanisms (arbitration, mediation) as needed; proficient in MS Office and other business software; excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
Salary, Benefits and Working Environment

The base salary range provided below is geographic-area dependent and commensurate with candidate experience. In addition to base salary, employees are eligible for an annual bonus and a comprehensive benefits package.

  • Colorado outside of Denver metro, Maryland, Massachusetts (outside of Boston metro area), Minnesota, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Vermont Pay Ranges: $134,800 - $185,800
  • Boston metro area, California outside of Los Angeles & San Francisco metro area, Connecticut, Chicago metro area, Denver metro area, New Jersey (outside of New York City metro area), New York State (outside of New York City metro area), & Washington State Pay Ranges: $148,100 - $204,300
  • New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco metro areas Pay Ranges: $161,800 - $223,100
