Job summary

HDR is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer in Denver to lead complex remediation projects, including remedial investigations, feasibility studies, design and remedial action implementation. You will supervise teams, ensure regulatory compliance, and manage client relationships to deliver safe, cost-effective solutions.

Preferred candidates have 12+ years in remediation, PM experience, and expertise with VOCs/SVOCs, PFAS, and field investigations.

Qualifications

The Senior Environmental Engineer serves as a technical leader and project manager for complex environmental remediation projects involving contaminated soil, groundwater, sediment, bedrock, mining sites, and industrial facilities. This role is responsible for leading remedial investigations, feasibility studies, remedial design, remedial action implementation, construction management, and long-term site closure strategies. The Senior Environmental Engineer provides technical oversight, mentors junior staff, manages client relationships, and supports business development initiatives while ensuring project quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Sr. Environmental Engineer responsibilities include:
  • Lead and direct complex remedial investigation, feasibility study, remedial design, and remedial action projects for federal, state, municipal, and private-sector clients.
  • Develop innovative remediation strategies for sites impacted by VOCs, SVOCs, metals, PCBs, pesticides, PFAS, NAPL, emerging contaminants, and mixed waste streams.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record for remedial design projects, providing technical review and approval of engineering deliverables.
  • Work on diverse remedial engineering projects that with a wide range of contaminants (VOCs/SVOCs/metals/PCBs/Pesticides/NAPL) in all types of media (soil/groundwater/sediment/bedrock/abandoned mines, etc.) utilizing innovative remedial technologies (P& T/removal/dredging/ISS/chemical oxidation/bioremediation/capping).
  • Develop project scopes, work plans, schedules, cost estimates, and budgets.
  • Serve as Senior Technical Lead on high-profile remediation projects.
  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, change orders, and construction documentation.
  • Support startup, optimization, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring of remediation systems.
  • Oversee preparation of Remedial Investigations, Feasibility Studies, Pre-Design Investigations, Remedial Design and Remedial Action Reports.
  • Lead meetings and negotiations with regulatory agencies including EPA, state environmental agencies, and federal stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement field investigations. Primary role is to supervise investigation team from office but may require leading investigation from field on larger projects.
  • Serve as a consultant and supervisor of remedial construction management projects as needed.
  • Work independently on technical tasks involving data analysis, interpreting results, and preparing technical reports, plans and specifications under the guidance of senior engineers on larger projects.
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers and environmental professionals.
  • Assist in marketing efforts for remediation design projects proposals and contract pursuits.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in remedial investigation, design and implementation of remedial actions, as well as some project management experience.
  • Strong leadership, client-management, and team-building capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team often with professionals across multiple offices.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following health and safety protocols.
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced dynamic environment handling multiple tasks and meeting strict deadlines.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Experience with Federal Superfund, DoD, DOE, USACE, or other federal environmental programs.
  • Mining remediation and abandoned mine lands experience.
  • Experience with PFAS investigation and remediation projects.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment and remedy optimization.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, Bentley, and environmental data management platforms.
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification.
  • PMP certification or demonstrated project management leadership.
  • Experience negotiating remedial actions and regulatory decisions with federal and state agencies.
  • Established client relationships and a successful business development track record.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering or closely related Engineering field
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in remedial investigation, design and implementation of remedial actions, as well as some project management experience
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (including Access, Excel, Word)
  • Excellent communication skills are essential
  • Experience with soil and groundwater remedial technologies is preferred
