Job summary

Intuitive Surgical in Sunnyvale seeks a Senior Engineering Technician to support the Manufacturing Engineering team with upgrades, troubleshooting, repair, testing, and calibration. The role requires system depth, independent decision making, and coordination across engineering disciplines to minimize downtime.

The ideal candidate has extensive wiring/electro-mechanical experience, strong documentation habits, and the ability to work with cross-functional teams to design, test, and validate

Qualifications

  • Significant experience with wiring diagrams, schematics, assembly drawings, fab drawings.
  • Ability to perform complex technical issues on various electrical/electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of computers, word processing and spreadsheet applications for documentation and data presentation.
  • Ability to read, modify, and execute test scripts used for debugging.
  • Ability to learn quickly across technologies: Digital/Analog electronics, optical components, servo components, machined parts, sheet metal, cable assemblies.
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written, to partner with production techs, supervisors, and engineers.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Document findings in quality notifications as part of Device History Records.
  • Electronic and Mechanical assembly skills (soldering, crimping, box build, fiber handling, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate activities with engineers and line supervisors to ensure each system is in good working order.
  • Triage issues quickly and recommend actions to limit downtime.
  • Perform simple on-the-spot reworks (crimping, soldering, threading, optics alignment).
  • Document all activities for formal records.
  • Order parts and assemble/bring up duplicate fixtures for production.
  • Assist or run engineering tests and collect data for DOE activities.
  • Assist with development fixtures for evaluation and modifications.
  • Support Engineering Change orders implementation.
  • Follow SOPs, safety rules, and regulatory procedures.
  • Identify problems, risks, and improvement areas within the work unit.

Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

This position will be responsible for supporting the Manufacturing Engineering team, which includes upgrade, troubleshooting, repair, test, and calibration. This also requires system technical depth, experience, and independent decision making, and demonstrates competency to perform the duties of a Senior Engineering technician. Ability to coordinate system repairs with other engineering disciplines to limit down time.

Candidates must be highly motivated with a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate activities with engineers and line supervisors to make sure that each system is in good working order.
  • Perform quick triage of the issue and recommend best course of action to limit downtime.
  • Perform simple reworks on the spot (cable crimping, solder components, tap threads, clean optics, adjust alignments etc.).
  • Document all activities in support for our formal records.
  • Order parts and assemble/bring up duplicate fixtures for production.
  • Assist or execute engineering level tests and collect data to support design of experiment activities or characterize an assembly.
  • Assist with parts order, build, and modification of development fixtures for evaluation.
  • Generate or assist on the implementation of Engineering Change orders.
  • Follows all corporate, safety, SOP, DOP procedures and regulations.
  • Understands problems, areas of risk, and areas for improvement within work unit, including the processes and procedures.
  • Perform other engineering technician duties as needed.
Qualifications

Skill/Job Requirements:

  • Significant experience with wiring diagrams, schematics, assembly drawings, fab drawings, mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to perform complex technical issues on various electrical/electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of computers, word processing and spreadsheet applications for documentation and data presentation.
  • Ability to read, modify, and execute test scripts use for debug
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to variety of technologies that allow effective troubleshooting. Examples: Digital and Analog Electronics components, optical components, servo components, machined parts, sheet metal parts, cable assemblies.
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written, to be able to partner effectively with production techs, supervisors, training department as well as Manufacturing/Design/Test Engineers.
  • Proven ability to work well in team environment
  • Experience with JIRA, Agile, and SAP or equivalent tools
  • Effectively use of troubleshooting and measurement equipment like oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators, custom test platforms.
  • Document findings of investigation in quality notifications which are part of official Device History Records.
  • Electronic and Mechanical assembly skills (Examples: soldering, crimping, box build, fiber handling, optical component handling, cable routing, and use of RTV/epoxy).

Education/Experience:

  • AS degree, trade school, military technical training. B.S. EE/Comp E or equivalent is preferred.
  • A minimum of eight years of troubleshooting experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
