Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in the Houston area seeks a Senior Design Engineer for Water and Wastewater Linear Infrastructure to support public utility clients across Texas. This hybrid role blends hands‑on design leadership with project management, mentoring engineers, and coordinating multidisciplinary teams on complex projects.

You will develop conceptual and final construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates, lead client relationships in the Texas region, and contribute to our One Water strategy

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in engineering required.
  • Minimum 8–15 years of experience since degree, with 3+ years in PM/supervisory roles.
  • Professional Engineer licensure in TX or reciprocity possible within 6 months.

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an experienced design Sr. Engineer for our Water/Wastewater Linear Infrastructure projects to support public utility clients throughout Texas. This position is based in the Houston area and offers a flexible hybrid work environment with remote work opportunities, subject to project and client needs. The ideal candidate will have strong technical working knowledge of municipal pipeline design to develop conceptual and final construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates. The candidate will also have strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage design efforts on complex projects. The role includes serving as Project Manager for local projects and studies, with opportunities to provide program management services to key clients. In addition to local assignments, this position offers opportunities to support projects across Texas and the United States, as business needs and project availability allow.

Role

This role is structured to leverage technical strengths while positioning for expanded client relationship management. General type of projects that will be worked on from planning through design and construction include:

  • Large Diameter Pipelines (greater than 24-inch in diameter).
  • Trenchless (micro tunneling, jack and bore, etc.) designs.
  • Pipeline rehabilitation.
  • Environmental Assessments.
  • Water and sanitary sewer rehabilitation.
  • Condition assessment programs.
  • Water and sewer relocation.
  • Bid and construction phase support.
Your role
  • Help shape, win, and deliver the next generation of water and water infrastructure projects across Texas.
  • Cultivate and sustain relationships with priority clients across the Texas Region and communities.
  • Maintain a hands‑on role in project execution while leading multidisciplinary teams delivering water infrastructure projects.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of our One Water Market strategy, planning and delivery.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers in the development of design concepts.
  • Coordinate with clients and stakeholders. Coordinate with other disciplines.
  • Plan and review the production of engineering investigations, models, planning work, reports, drawings and specifications.
  • Develop and evaluate plans and criteria for new projects, weighing alternatives and selecting the most cost‑effective solution.
  • Analyse technical problems, assess the feasibility of proposed techniques and procedures, and devise new approaches and alternative solutions.
  • Analyse project dimension and scope and prepare or oversee the preparation of cost and manpower estimates, schedules and job budgets.
  • Coordinate work with other project and task managers, guides others on drafting and design of preliminary and final plans, guides others on water infrastructure planning and engineering and preparation of studies/reports.
  • Provide quality control and maintain quality standards, check work performed by others.
  • Manage projects.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
  • Upholding engineering ethics and professional standards of conduct.
About You
  • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering. This level may be achieved by Engineers with minimum 10 years of experience since B.S., 9 years' experience since M.S.
  • Excellent Water and/or wastewater design skills and experience.
  • The typical incumbent has minimum 8 to 15 years' experience since Bachelor's degree, with at least three of these years in positions with project management or supervisory responsibilities.
  • Good interpersonal skills, technical writing capabilities and well‑developed communication and presentation skills are a requirement. PC skills including Microsoft Office are required. Experience with Autodesk design packages (e.g. Civil3D) a plus.
  • Professional Engineer Licensure in TX, or in another state with reciprocity possible to in 6 month period.

Additional information

Expected compensation range is between $120,600 - $155,000 annually depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
