Job description

About us

e184 is a biotechnology research company dedicated to overcoming the limits of human biology. One of our programs in reproductive technologies develops ectogenesis - the ability to support human development outside the body - to expand reproductive freedom and redefine what is possible in medicine. Our mission is to remove the biological constraints that limit who can safely carry a pregnancy, enabling new pathways to parenthood for individuals facing medical risk, infertility, or physiological barriers to gestation.

We operate at the intersection of biology, engineering, and computational science, building integrated platforms that combine advanced tissue models, adaptive culture systems, and automated experimental workflows to understand and recreate the conditions required for healthy human gestation beyond the uterus.

Role overview

As a Senior Engineer at e184, you will lead the design and development of software systems that integrate and control the experimental hardware enabling ex utero gestation. Your work will focus on building intuitive, reliable interfaces that unify perfusion systems, continuous imaging platforms, environmental controls, and monitoring infrastructure into a cohesive operational platform.

You will own software development from interface design through system integration and deployment, working closely with engineers, biologists, and hardware teams to translate complex experimental workflows into robust, user-centered control systems. This is a highly hands-on role for a software engineer who enjoys bridging UI design, real-time system control, and scientific experimentation in a fast-moving startup environment where software reliability directly impacts biological outcomes.

What you'll do:
  • Design unified control interfaces: Develop user interfaces that allow researchers to monitor and control perfusion, imaging, and environmental systems through a single integrated platform.

  • Integrate hardware systems: Build software layers that communicate with pumps, sensors, imaging devices, and environmental controllers, enabling coordinated operation across experimental subsystems.

  • Develop real-time monitoring tools: Create dashboards for live visualization of system state, environmental parameters, and experimental performance with clear alerting and logging functionality.

  • Implement automation and workflows: Design software workflows that support automated experimental protocols, scheduling, and reproducible system operation.

  • Ensure system reliability and safety: Develop fault detection, error handling, and recovery mechanisms to maintain stable long-duration experiments.

  • Collaborate across disciplines: Work closely with hardware engineers and scientists to translate experimental needs into software architecture and intuitive user experiences.

  • Establish software standards: Contribute to code architecture, documentation, and testing practices that support scalable and maintainable platform development.

Core requirements:
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with significant focus on UI/UX development

  • Strong experience designing and implementing complex user interfaces for technical or scientific applications

  • Proficiency in modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Vue, or similar)

  • Experience interfacing software with hardware systems, sensors, or laboratory instrumentation

  • Experience designing systems for real-time monitoring or device control

  • Strong understanding of software architecture and maintainable system design

  • Ability to independently drive software projects from concept through deployment

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in interdisciplinary environments

  • Comfort working in a fast‑paced, iterative startup environment

You’ll stand out with:
  • Experience developing software for laboratory automation, robotics, medical devices, or scientific instrumentation

  • Experience integrating imaging systems or real-time data streams

  • Familiarity with control systems, hardware communication protocols (e.g., serial, USB, TCP/IP, MQTT)

  • Experience building data visualization dashboards for live experimental monitoring

  • Experience designing safety-critical or long-running control systems

  • Backend experience supporting data acquisition and logging pipelines

  • Prior startup or early-stage technology development experience

Why e184?
  • Unrivaled impact: Your work directly enables technology that transforms human fertility and reproductive medicine.

  • Full-scope growth: Gain exposure to the entire lifecycle of discovery. From screening to mechanistic validation.

  • Best of both worlds: Experience the creative chaos of an early-stage startup with the stability of a well-capitalized company.

  • Elite collaboration: Work alongside a world-class team who are as driven as you are.

The perks
  • Competitive salary + equity participation is considered

  • State-of-the-art facility in Portland metro area

  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, Vision, and 401(k) with company match

  • 20 days PTO + 11 paid holidays
