Role Overview

This role is responsible for evaluating and improving the thermal performance of combustion (gas) turbines, heat recovery steam generators, steam turbines, combined-cycle power plants, and hydrogen production facilities, and related power-generation equipment.

The successful applicant will serve as a subject matter expert in thermal performance and emissions while providing technical leadership and guidance to other engineers. Experience with gas turbine, steam turbine, and heat recovery steam generator technologies—as well as power plant performance testing and technical proposal management is highly valued.

The role supports the full business-development process, including feasibility studies, responses to customer requests for information, technical proposal preparation, bid clarifications, and contract negotiations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to peers and less-experienced engineers.
  • Mentor engineers and actively share technical knowledge and practical experience.
  • Work closely with the Manager, Director, and peers to prioritize daily assignments and deliver required results.
  • Prepare thermal performance and emissions estimates using appropriate engineering tools and software.
    • Develop equipment-level performance estimates for gas turbines (GT), heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), and steam turbines (ST).
    • Develop power train (GT+HRSG+ST) and combined cycle (CC) plant performance estimates.
    • Model the performance of hydrogen production facilities.
  • Develop gas turbine and combined cycle stack emissions estimates.
  • Prepare customer-facing technical documents and supporting materials for proposal submissions.
  • Perform technical analyses and communicate findings in clear, concise reports.
  • Provide technical support to Mitsubishi Power commercial operations, sales, and marketing teams.
  • Identify opportunities for product development and technical innovation.
  • Continuously improve Applications Engineering tools, processes, and procedures.
  • Follow company work instructions, guidelines, and procedures, and contribute to their ongoing development.
  • Support the preparation and delivery of technical proposals.
    • Review requests for proposals and identify thermal performance and emissions requirements.
    • Help develop proposal strategies in coordination with Commercial Operations, Sales, and Applications Engineering leadership.
    • Lead the preparation of proposal performance data and performance guarantees, ensuring complete and timely submission.
    • Coordinate required management reviews and keep the Manager and Director informed of progress, risks, and key decisions.
    • Work closely with Commercial Operations to align technical and commercial proposal content.
    • Participate as a subject matter expert in technical bid clarifications and contract negotiations.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare technical papers for professional societies and other public forums.

  • Travel approximately 5%–10%.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical, fluids, thermal, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Experience: At least 10 years of relevant experience, including combined-cycle performance modeling with commercially available software such as Thermoflow, GateCycle, or Ebsilon.
    • A thorough understanding of simple cycle and combined cycle performance and emissions is required.
    • Awareness of the applicable ASME Testing Codes – PTC 22 (Gas Turbine), PTC 46 (Power Plant), PTC 6 (Steam Turbine), PTC 4.4 (HRSG), & PTC 19 (Uncertainty)
    • Awareness of typical Power Plant pollutants/emissions (NOx, SOx, CO, CO2, VOC, UHC, Particulate Matter etc.)
  • Communication skills: Ability to read and interpret technical, business, and regulatory materials in English; prepare reports, correspondence, and procedures; and present technical information effectively to managers, customers, clients, and public audiences. Japanese, Spanish, or Portuguese language skills are beneficial but not required.
  • Engineering and analytical skills: Working knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, geometry, trigonometry, probability, and statistics, with the ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical engineering problems.
  • Problem-solving skills: Ability to define problems, gather and analyze data, establish facts, draw sound conclusions, and interpret complex technical instructions in written, mathematical, or diagram form.
  • Computer skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with databases, project-management tools, technical diagrams, flowcharts, and graphics. Experience with combined-cycle performance software such as Thermoflow, GateCycle, or Ebsilon is required.
