Job summary

Georgia-Pacific is recruiting a Senior Engineer for the Paper Technical Center to provide technical expertise across North America paper assets. You will work with both hourly and salary staff, diagnose issues, and lead improvements while supporting asset optimization and new technology trials. Domestic travel is required.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in manufacturing/engineering roles supporting paper making operations
  • Knowledge of headbox, Yankee steam, hood systems, formation, sheet handling, pressure rolls, machine clothing
  • Able to read P&ID, layout and mechanical drawings
  • Proven ability to lead, communicate, and mentor in a manufacturing environment
  • Willing to travel 50–70% and work weekends/nights/holidays if needed
  • Willing to wear PPE at production facilities
  • Able to work in environments with platforms, heat, and humidity

Responsibilities

  • Identify improvement opportunities for processes and equipment at production sites
  • Review maintenance and downtime data to identify equipment needs
  • Lead efforts to restore asset performance to base case with internal/3rd party support
  • Support installation, commissioning, and optimization of new assets
  • Assist asset owners in prioritizing improvement opportunities by business need
  • Develop standardized operating and maintenance strategies with SMEs and operations
  • Provide mentorship to hourly and salaried engineers and operations staff
  • Plan outage activities with operations to hit target results
  • Apply SME insights to support short-term technical requests across facilities
  • Assist in trials of new process tech and equipment and assess applicability

Your Job

Georgia-Pacific is recruiting for a Senior Engineer to join our Paper Technical Center that is part of the Manufacturing Technical Group. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise to a variety of paper making assets across Georgia Pacific's North America facilities and will have a strong capability to work with both hourly and salary employees.

Our Team

Utilization of Principle-Based Management and Frameworks to proactively support and grow the diagnostic tools and knowledge for the Paper Manufacturing site's paper machines. This would include diagnosing root cause of operational issues, leading and assisting local resources in resolution of issues, identifying improvement opportunities through assessments, developing expertise in others, and maintaining knowledge of emerging technologies. This role does require domestic travel on a regular basis.

What You Will Do
  • Work with hourly and salaried personnel at production sites to identify improvement opportunities for both processes and equipment through site assessments
  • Review maintenance and downtime data to identify production equipment that needs repair, replacement, or reconfiguration
  • Coordinate and lead efforts to return asset performance to optimized base case with third party support and internal resources as needed
  • Support installation, commissioning, and optimization of new assets
  • Assist asset owners in managing and prioritizing lists of improvement opportunities for their respective assets based on business need
  • Work with Subject Matter Experts and operations personnel within Georgia Pacific to develop standardized operating and maintenance strategies for similar assets and equipment
  • Provide technical and professional support and mentoring for hourly and salaried engineering and operations personnel both at local facilities and within the corporate engineering team
  • Assist in planning specific outage activities with operations teams to ensure that desired results are achieved
  • Apply Subject Matter Expertise to support short-term technical requests across multiple facilities
  • Support trials of new process technology and equipment and provide assessment of applicability with existing asset base
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • 10-year combined experience in manufacturing/engineering role(s) supporting paper making operations. Tissue papermaking experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge and expertise in one or more specific paper making equipment and process areas: headbox operations, yankee steam systems, hood systems, formation, sheet handling, pressure rolls, and machine clothing
  • Able to read and interpret piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID's), layout drawings, and mechanical drawings
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, communicate with, and mentor others in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to build strong relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Willing and able to travel 50%-70% of the time and willing and able to work occasional weekends, nights, and holidays when needed
  • Willing and able to wear the necessary Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (i.e. hard hats, safety glasses, face shield, fall protection, respirator, hearing protection, steel-toe boots or safety shoes and other PPE required by specific jobs) while at production facilities
  • Willing and able to work in operating environments that include platforms and catwalks, elevated temperatures, and variable humidity levels
What Will Put You Ahead
  • Bachelor's Degree in Pulp and Paper Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated team/group facilitation experience - meetings, knowledge sharing, problem-solving, etc.
  • Career progression within Paper Operations (tissue and towel preferred).
  • Proven capability of leading through influence; working with and through large cross-functional teams

For this role, we anticipate paying a base salary of $140k - $180k.
