Job summary

Phillips 66 is seeking a Senior Engineer, Process Integrity to tackle complex problems and apply characterization, troubleshooting, and modeling to improve reliability across refining, midstream, and renewable assets.

You will lead multi-site projects, mentor less experienced engineers, and develop new diagnostic approaches while communicating results to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Corrosion Engineering, or related field.
• 6+ years of experience in applied technical work, troubleshooting, or problem solving in refining, midstream, petrochemical, laboratory, or related setting.
• 3+ years hands-on experience in refinery or petrochemical process chemistry, materials, corrosion, fouling, or failure analysis.

As a Senior Engineer, Process Integrity in our Energy Research & Innovation organization, you will investigate complex technical problems and turn advanced characterization, troubleshooting, and modeling work into practical solutions that support the reliability and performance of Phillips 66's refining, midstream, and renewable fuel assets. You'll work across disciplines to lead challenging troubleshooting projects, develop improved methods, advise business partners, and build technical capability in a collaborative environment where your expertise can make a measurable impact.

What You'll Do

• Identify opportunities to apply laboratory and field testing to real operating problems; design and execute experiments and tests using appropriate methods and analytical techniques; and translate results into practical, unit-level recommendations that resolve issues and support Phillips 66 operations.
• Develop and deliver plans for significant technical support and troubleshooting efforts, managing a portfolio of projects while balancing priorities, resources, schedules, and technical risk across multiple sites and customers.
• Analyze data from laboratory, field, process, and other sources to identify trends and root causes, evaluate operational and business impacts, and translate findings into actionable recommendations that support site decisions.
• Apply advanced diagnostic methods, analytical characterization techniques, modeling, simulation, scientific software, and company-approved AI tools to investigate complex technical problems and evaluate outcomes.
• Improve troubleshooting processes, procedures, test methodologies, and tools; develop new techniques and diagnostic capabilities; and create reusable standards that strengthen the quality, consistency, and efficiency of technical support across the organization.
• Provide expert technical advice on findings, standards, procedures, and emerging integrity issues, helping sites and stakeholders take informed action across refining, midstream, and renewable businesses.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in areas such as corrosion, fouling mitigation, crude quality, renewable feed quality, or product quality; mentor colleagues and provide guidance to less experienced scientists and engineers.
• Build business cases that justify proactive investigations and investments to improve reliability and operations.
• Contribute to technical reports, publications, and knowledge-sharing materials, and communicate findings clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Monitor external developments, regulations, and industry best practices; represent Phillips 66 in technical forums and bring relevant insights back to the organization.
• Provide safety leadership, support sound laboratory and operating practices, and adapt plans as new information, priorities, or technical challenges emerge.

What You'll Bring - Required

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Corrosion Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering field.
• 6 or more years of experience in applied technical work, troubleshooting, or technical problem solving in a refining, midstream, petrochemical, laboratory, or related technical setting.
• 3 or more years of hands-on experience in refinery or petrochemical process chemistry, materials, corrosion, fouling, or failure analysis.

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

• PhD or Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Corrosion Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering field.
• 10 or more years of experience in applied technical work, troubleshooting, or technical problem solving in a refining, midstream, petrochemical, laboratory, or related technical setting.
• 8 or more years of hands-on experience in refinery or petrochemical process chemistry, feedstock quality, materials, corrosion, fouling, or failure analysis in an industry, research, or laboratory setting.
• Experience in corrosion troubleshooting and support, including desalting and overhead corrosion, amine or sulfur treating corrosion, naphthenic acid corrosion, sulfidation corrosion, free-fatty-acid corrosion, or other refinery corrosion mechanisms.
• Strong working knowledge of corrosion mechanisms, materials degradation, welding and metallurgy, chemical treatment, coatings, fouling mitigation, or corrosion modeling.
• Experience conducting or supporting failure analysis, root-cause investigations, risk assessments, or laboratory corrosion studies.
• Experience with corrosion modeling or simulation tools such as COMSOL, Aspen HYSYS, OLI, or similar applications.
• Proficiency selecting, interpreting, and drawing conclusions from analytical techniques including XRF, XRD, CHN, IC, ICP, GCxGC-MS, GC-MS, SIMDIS, SEM, TGA, and optical microscopy.
• Experience supporting refinery unit operations or midstream systems, including crude and overhead, desalter, FCC, hydroprocessing, sulfur and amine, coker, gas plant, fractionation, TEG, dehydration, or pipelines.
• Strong understanding of the chemical and physical properties of crude oils, refined products, renewable feedstocks, and related intermediate streams.
• Experience using AI tools to support research, analysis, or technical problem-solving.
• Experience mentoring colleagues, critically reviewing work, guiding method development through influence, or representing an organization in external technical forums and industry consortia.
• Experience providing general supervision of more junior colleagues.
• Experience applying research methods, experimental design, data collection and analysis, and research and development testing.
• Experience using research databases, scientific software, laboratory equipment interfacing tools, or related technologies.
• Experience performing advanced data analysis, modeling, or simulation for scientific or technical problem-solving.

Compensation Range

This position has a base salary range of $ 160,200 – $195,800.
