Job summary

Thrivent is seeking a senior data engineer to design and optimize data pipelines, leveraging Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and Snowflake/Databricks across the enterprise. You will work with business and technical stakeholders to implement quality data solutions, while mentoring teammates and shaping architecture.

This role supports remote work from the United States. You will design scalable data architectures, implement ingestion patterns, and contribute to governance and testing strategies, ensuring

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or foreign equivalent degree in Applied Computer Science, MIS, Computer Science, or a related field plus 5 years of progressive post-baccalaureate experience as a data engineer, specialist or consultant, or closely related occupation.
• 5+ years of experience with Hadoop, Spark, Spark streaming, and Kafka.
• Experience with Hive, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Snowflake, and Databricks.
• Designing and architecting data pipelines.
• Interacting with clients for requirement gathering and finalizing specifications.
• Using IICS, Informatica Power Center and Zena.
• At least 3 years of experience in Python and Scala.
• Demonstrated data warehouse modeling (STAR schema); Snowflake & Databricks modeling; building reusable data frameworks; developing and executing test cases; providing technical guidance; data lake enterprise implementation.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Thrivent teams to define data ingestion patterns and optimize pipelines.
• Participate in product planning and decomposition of work.
• Provide technical guidance to teams and serve as SME in data analysis and pipeline deployment.
• Build reusable components for reporting and analytics and support data architecture strategy.

Design Solutions

• Apply technical knowledge to drive outcomes for customers;


• Work and problem solve independently on initiatives that align to the broader software engineering strategy;


• Work closely with business and technical stakeholders to design and implement data quality frameworks;

Develop Software

• Work independently, as well as collaboratively with team, in developing core software for the product that delivers outcomes;


• Consistent and dependable in delivering core software that delivers outcomes and meets/exceeds the teams’ expectations for stability, scalability, resilience, etc.;

Learn and Apply New Techniques

• Share new ideas and techniques with team;


• Encourage junior engineers to invest in learning as a part of their job;

Collaborate within the Team

• Participate in team’s collaboration sessions to provide technical expertise to solve problems/remove technical roadblocks for the team;


• Participate in product planning and implementation. Help team to understand and decompose work;


• Collaborate with enterprise source system teams to define, standardize, and optimize data ingestion patterns;

Define Engineering Standards and Patterns

• Contribute to developing engineering practices, templates and frameworks in collaboration with the team;

DevOps

• Continuously assess technology to build more stable, scalable, and resilient software. Use data to measure progress;


• Promote and expand on the use of the CI/CD pipeline to improve the deployment and build process;


• Participate in team support rotation and provide expert knowledge on focus subsystems;


• Develop and maintain monitoring and observability frameworks to ensure reliable and scalable data pipelines;

Select & Manage Technology Vendors

• Contribute to define the selection criteria for selecting the right technology vendors;


• Participate in proof of concept/technology along with the vendor. Coach Engineers;


• Provide guidance to junior engineers to help them learn foundational software engineering skills;


• Provide technical expertise and help the team to solve technical/software issues;


• Provide trainings to the junior developers and groom them;


• Provide domain expertise on software products in their area to junior engineers to help them learn/grow their skills and contribute as part of the team;

Recruit/Build Talent

• Engage in the tech community to build the Thrivent technology brand and position as the employer of choice in the market;


• Participate in the interview process or be part of the panel to recruit the right talent to the team;


• Contribute to the recruitment to define the structure of the interview process to hire the right talent to the team;

Requirements:

• Designing and architecting data pipelines;

• Using IICS, Informatica power center and Zena.


• Must possess at least 3 years of experience in the following:


• Working with Python and Scala.


• Must possess demonstrable experience in the following:


• Datawarehouse model using STAR schema;


• Modeling data in Snowflake and Databricks;


• Building reusable frameworks to reduce manual effort;


• Developing and executing test cases;


• Providing technical guidance to teams by defining and executing Proof of concept;


• Acting as subject matter expertise in data analysis, building optimized data pipelines, deploying and maintaining a large volume of heterogenous data to create enterprise data lake;


• Participating in setting strategy and standards through data architecture and implementation leveraging big data and analytics tools and technologies;


• Building reusable components for reporting and analytics.

Position is based out of and reports to Thrivent’s HQ in Minneapolis, MN, but allows for the option to telecommute from a home office anywhere in the United States.

Salary

at least $140,000.00 per year
