Job description

Company Overview

MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification. We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next‑generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems.

Position Overview

The Senior Applications Engineer will have a technical background and will understand how customers use the unique properties of rare earth permanent magnets across a variety of end‑use applications. The role involves working with customers in the design and quoting process, building tools and systems that support these processes, and identifying future product value by synthesizing customer needs and market trends.

Position Responsibilities
  • Act as the permanent magnet subject matter expert with existing and potential customers, reviewing requests for quotes and other requests for information; interpreting customer requests into well‑defined product requirements.
  • Lead cross‑functional project execution to integrate MP magnets into customer applications.
  • Engage with customer technology teams to understand, communicate, and negotiate product requirements.
  • Coordinate with cross‑functional teams to provide customers with samples and prototypes.
  • Synthesize and communicate short‑ and long‑duration customer project goals based on current business conditions and evolving customer and market needs.
  • Develop, deploy, and continuously improve tools for the effective and timely quoting of new products; train and support the sales team as needed.
  • Identify value opportunities for MP Materials products, realized through applications engineering, product or process development, continuous improvement activities, and/or long‑term strategic initiatives.
Basic Qualifications
  • BS or higher in mechanical, electrical engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years as an applications engineer.
  • Working knowledge of magnetic properties and experience specifying rare earth permanent magnet grades for applications such as traction motors, actuators, and sensors.
  • Experience working directly with external customers to understand technical needs and translate them into operational actions and product specifications.
  • Experience partnering with commercial teams to generate product specifications and quotations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a spectrum of roles, from customers to senior leaders to manufacturing operators.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare well‑written documents for reporting to customers and leadership.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Expert level user of Microsoft Office suite.
Desired Qualities
  • Hands‑on experience in materials manufacturing, ideally the manufacturing of rare earth materials, permanent magnets, or ceramic and metal powders.
  • Experience conducting market studies to evaluate, interpret, and forecast design trends and component requirements for electric machines.
  • Advanced degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or materials science.
