Job summary

Nordstrom is seeking a senior software engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable front-end and back-end systems powering purchase order management. You will collaborate with Merchandising, Planning, Vendor Compliance, and Supply Chain teams to influence technical decisions and priorities.

You will contribute to CI/CD, cloud migration, and AI-assisted development while crafting enterprise-grade web applications and services. On-call rotations and cross-functional teamwork are expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering field or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong front-end proficiency: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, with React/Angular/Vue.js.
  • Backend expertise: Node.js/Express.js, Java/.NET or Python Django/Flask.
  • Database experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis.
  • CI/CD, Docker, and cloud services (AWS/Azure/GCP) experience.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, GitHub Copilot).
  • Experience in enterprise-grade web apps, scalable architectures, and Agile teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative solutions to drive Nordstrom's business and showcase strong engineering fundamentals.
  • Collaborate with multiple teams across Merchandising, Planning, Vendor Compliance, and Supply Chain to guide technical decisions.
  • Design, build, and maintain front-end applications and backend services powering P.O. management.
  • Advance engineering practices including CI/CD, cloud migration, TDD, and AI-enabled development.
  • Design and ship AI agents supporting Merchandise Ordering.
  • Assist managers with planning and high-level software strategy definitions.
  • Support production systems after deployment, including on-call rotations and bug fixes.

Job description

Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative solutions to drive Nordstrom's business, demonstrating competence in engineering concepts and theories and combining them with business understanding
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams, business stakeholders, as well as program and product managers across Merchandising, Planning, Vendor Compliance, and Supply Chain to make technical decisions and influence priorities and tradeoffs
  • Design, build, and maintain front‑end applications and backend services and integrations that power purchase order management
  • Contribute toward moving the team forward in engineering practices such as continuous integration, continuous delivery, cloud migration, test‑driven development, and AI‑enabled software development
  • Design, develop, and ship AI agents that support Merchandise Ordering
  • Assist engineering manager(s) with planning, analysis, and definition of high‑level software strategies and solutions
  • Transition from application development to support as needed, participate in rotating 24/7 shifts to support developed products, and work with business, infrastructure, and security teams to deliver enhancements and bug fixes for production systems

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in an engineering discipline, preferably computer science, or equivalent
  • 8+ years of professional experience in delivering quality software, ideally across the full stack
  • Strong proficiency in front‑end development: solid experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and modern frameworks such as React.js, Angular, or Vue.js
  • Backend development expertise: hands‑on experience with backend technologies such as Node.js, Express.js, Java, .NET, Python (Django/Flask), or similar
  • Database management: proficient in working with both relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Redis)
  • DevOps & deployment: familiar with CI/CD pipelines, Docker, cloud services (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and deployment best practices
  • Practical experience with AI‑assisted software development — using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development and improve code quality
  • Experience building enterprise‑level web applications from scratch, with a demonstrated deep understanding of technology choices
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve front‑end and backend issues efficiently
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, collaborating with cross‑functional teams including designers, testers, and product managers
  • Experience with system design, architecture, scaling, and performance testing.
  • Experience building services is a plus
  • Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals.
