Job summary

Maricopa Association of Governments is seeking a transportation engineer to support the Safety Policy Program. You will manage studies, analyze crash data, evaluate safety measures, and coordinate with internal and external partners on design and implementation.

The role requires a PE license and 3+ years in engineering or urban traffic safety; strong written and presentation skills are essential. Hybrid work with at least three days in the office is offered.

Qualifications

  • At least three years in engineering, urban traffic safety, or planning.

Responsibilities

  • Manage scopes, schedules and budgets of transportation planning studies.
  • Assess crash data, safety countermeasures, design, cost and risk.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders for design and implementation efforts.
  • Lead consultant procurement, execution and oversight.
  • Present at MAG Transportation Safety Committee meetings.

The Safety Team strengthens regional transportation outcomes by conducting studies, identifying emerging needs, evaluating system performance, refining safety processes, and coordinating priorities both within MAG and in collaboration with partner agencies and stakeholders.The PositionMAG is seeking a qualified transportation engineer to support the activities related to the management and implementation of the Safety Policy Program.Duties include but are not limited to:Managing scopes, schedules and budgets of transportation planning studies.Assessing, analyzing and evaluating crash data, safety countermeasures, transportation infrastructure design, functionality, cost, schedule, and project risk.Coordinating with key stakeholders for project design and implementation efforts.Managing the procurement, execution and oversight of consultant contracts.Facilitating the MAG Transportation Safety Committee and presenting at public meetings.Responding to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders on safety initiatives.The CandidateThe ideal candidate will be proficient in leading planning level analysis, coordinating with internal and external agency partners, and have experience with managing consultants or consultant teams. The candidate should have relevant experience in transportation safety planning, demonstrating a strong level of understanding and competency regarding urban traffic safety; multidisciplinary road safety initiatives; standards and best practices; and safety-related data. The candidate should also have experience presenting complex technical information to a diverse set of stakeholders, including members of the public and policy makers. Experience with human factors, safety education, and strong writing skills is a plus.Skilled in:Excellent communication and writing skills, time management, note taking, and highly organizedPresenting and conveying technical knowledge to a diverse set of stakeholders, the public and policy makersCoordinating with internal and external stakeholders or staffPrioritizing workload and responding quickly and accuratelyAnticipating needs and being proactiveBeing self-motivated with a desire to learn and contribute while being detail orientedAbility to:Lead planning level analysis and review engineering and design specific solutionsManage consultants or consultant teams of large urban area studiesAdapt to performing a wide range of duties, frequently shifting tasks of varying nature or complexityWork independentlyAnalyze and think critically, draw conclusions, and problem solvingDevelop productive relationships and work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders or staffManage multiple assignments with competing timelines effectivelyTechnology Skills:Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and webinar tools. Familiarity with software tools related to transportation safety and crash data analysis.Education and ExperienceBachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering or related fieldA master's degree and/or graduate work in a related field, such as urban planning, and public sector experience are preferable.At least three years of related work experience in engineering, urban traffic safety, and/or planningAny equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilitiesFamiliarity with standards, practices, and software tools related to transportation safety, such as: MUTCD, Highway Safety Manual, predictive safety methods, and spatial crash analysis using GIS.Required Licenses or CertificationsProfessional Engineer (PE) license requiredThe Maricopa Association of Governments is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
