Job summary

Smith Engineering is seeking a Sr. Commissioning Engineer to join our Energy Group in New York City. In this hands-on role, you will execute commissioning and RCx projects across large commercial properties, central plants, and critical facilities throughout NYC.

You will inspect, test, and optimize HVAC and mechanical systems, analyze BMS trend data, identify performance issues, and deliver data-driven solutions that drive energy savings and asset performance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5–10 years in commissioning or RCx.
• Deep knowledge of HVAC, central plants, and building controls per ASHRAE guidelines.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification and strong site safety practices.
• Strong communication to coordinate with chief engineers and facility managers.
• Self-motivated, detail-oriented problem-solver with drive to uncover root causes.

Responsibilities

• Field commissioning, testing, retro-commissioning of HVAC systems and BMS.
• Analyze BMS trend data to evaluate performance and identify anomalies.
• Ensure high-quality commissioning per ASHRAE guidelines and Local Law 87 RCx.
• Engage with chief engineers, building operators, and client teams on site.
• Propose process improvements and data-driven enhancements.
