Overview

We are seeking a full‑time Senior EMC Engineer – Aviation at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) certification and/or testing for complex products and integrated systems and providing technical leadership for EMC project planning and programs. The Aviation team demonstrates compliance with High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF) and Lightning for TSO to support both TC and STC requirements of complex avionics systems.

Essential Functions
  • Lead certification and/or testing of complex products and integrated systems, including scheduling, monitoring, tracking and adjusting the project plan to meet deadlines and requirements.
  • Prioritize and organize tasks to ensure effective time management and allow work on smaller projects alongside the main project.
  • Review and provide input to certification plans and test methods, monitor test capability, and recommend process and equipment improvements.
  • Represent Garmin among industry partners, peer groups and regulatory agencies (FAA, EASA, RTCA, GAMA, OEM, FCC, IEEE) as required.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced EMC Engineers (EMC Engineer 1 & 2).
  • Serve as technical leader in contributing input to aircraft certification routes for HIRF and Lightning.
  • Provide input into EMC protection and test level for product development efforts.
  • Understand FAA conformity and data approval processes and assist with preparation of FAA certification forms.
  • Perform hardware and software change analysis.
  • Coordinate with Garmin STC or OEM TC to develop certification requirements.
  • Coordinate with avionics installation teams and provide input into the architecture of installed systems to ensure that installations meet HIRF and Lightning requirements and that EMC testing will be applicable to the particulars of the installation.
  • Produce and/or supervise the creation of test plans and test reports, including definition, documentation and development of test setups that will be used during EMC testing such as harnesses, test loads and definitions of new interfaces.
  • Coordinate with EMC test facilities to ensure that testing is scheduled and planned appropriately to meet required objectives.
  • Supervise EMC testing at test facilities, recommending personnel staffing, documenting results and recommending disposition of any anomalies.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule).
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Word & Excel.
  • Demonstrated skills and/or training in project management.
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be positive, detail/quality oriented, organized, proactive, analytical, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi‑tasker and self‑starter with the ability to prioritize in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
  • Excellent time‑management skills and the ability to generate and support pragmatic solutions that meet Garmin’s market launch requirements while maintaining high quality standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5).
  • Knowledge and/or experience with DO 160 Sections 20 (Radio Frequency Susceptibility), Sections 22 (Lightning Induced Transient Susceptibility), and Sections 23 (Lightning Direct Affects).
  • Designated Engineering Representative (DER) or Unit Member (UM) status in HIRF and Lightning categories.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of EASA HIRF and lightning requirements, SAE ARP5412, 5413 and 5583.
  • Pilot License.
