Job summary

OTTO Engineering, Inc. is seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer - Controls in Carpentersville, IL. The role focuses on designing embedded electronics and firmware for rugged, industrial applications, with emphasis on CAN networks and automotive-style interfaces.

You will develop and troubleshoot CAN communication, work through prototype stages, and collaborate with partners to ensure seamless integration into OTTO’s high-quality products. Strong senior-level C/C++ skills are essential.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of embedded systems engineering experience with senior-level responsibility.
• Strong hands-on embedded C and C++ development experience.
• Extensive CAN experience including SAE J1939 and CANopen.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop embedded electronic and firmware systems for new and existing OTTO products.
• Develop firmware primarily in C and C++.
• Design, implement, and troubleshoot CAN communications (SAE J1939 and CANopen).
• Analyze CAN traffic, timing, and network behavior with diagnostic tools.
• Develop board-level electronics, schematics, PCB/PCBA design, and prototyping.
• Debug complex issues across hardware, firmware, and customer systems.
• Support product development from concept to production release.
• Create proof-of-concept systems and technology demonstrations for stakeholders.
• Coordinate with external software partners as needed.
• Mentor less-experienced engineers and document architecture decisions.
