Job summary

Zone 5 Technologies seeks an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to develop software for unmanned aircraft and embedded devices. You will integrate sensors and processors, lead new projects, and ensure robust debugging and validation in flight environments.

The role requires a Master’s in a related field and 12+ years in real-time embedded systems, with strong RTOS and C/C++ expertise, plus flight/sensor system know-how.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in CS/CE/EE/Aerospace or related field.
• 12+ years of embedded real-time software experience in avionics, automotive, or other safety-critical systems.
• Strong experience with real time operating systems, preferably VxWorks or FreeRTOS.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills in high-performing teams.
• Expert in C/C++ in a real-time embedded environment.
• Expert level experience with flight, avionics, or other sensor-driven systems.
• Comprehensive understanding of GPS, IMU, and other navigational constructs.
• Experience using MATLAB and Simulink.
• Experience with CAN bus, SPI, 1553, and RS485 protocols.
• Experience reading electrical hardware schematics and writing firmware for embedded devices.

Responsibilities

• Design, code, and implement software for embedded devices and systems on unmanned aircraft and flight-test those devices.
• Integrate sensors and processors into aircraft (autopilots, payloads, radios, etc.).
• Lead in development and planning of new projects and programs.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and isolate software issues.
• Read schematics and use debugging tools like oscilloscope and logic analyzer.
• Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers.
• Participate in design and peer reviews for solutions.
• Maintain high software quality with configuration control and mentoring juniors.
