Job summary

Symbotic is seeking a Senior Middleware Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain the middleware layer powering its mobile robot fleet. You will own features and provide expertise in inter-process communication, process management, and bot logging.

Ideal candidates have extensive C++ production experience, strong Linux knowledge, and familiarity with ROS2 and DDS, with travel up to 10% and a credential to drive between sites as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree in CS, Robotics, Engineering, or related field.
  • Production-quality software development in C++.
  • Strong understanding of Linux systems, process management, networking, IPC, and system services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of middleware on robotic platforms.
  • Design and develop middleware components for robotics systems.
  • Build and maintain logging, diagnostics, telemetry, and observability infra.
  • Develop process management systems for launching, monitoring, restarting and supervising services.
  • Design communication frameworks for reliable data exchange between components.
  • Deploy, validate, and troubleshoot software on physical bots and simulations.

You will work with a team of engineers andbe responsible forfeature ownership, providing technicalexpertisein areas such asinter process communication, process management, and bot logging. We are looking for a person whothrivesin a creative, collaborative, and agile developmentenvironment.

**What we do**

We are a talented team of roboticists and software engineers responsible for all software and firmware aspects of our mobile robots. These mobile robotsare responsible forhandling cartons inside the warehouse structure, moving them to and from storage locations. The mobile robots are key to the efficient operation of theSymboticsystems, and their reliability is paramount.

**What you’ll do**

  • Lead and contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of middleware on our robotic platforms.

  • Design and develop middleware components for robotics systems

  • Build andmaintainlogging, diagnostics, telemetry, and observability infrastructure.

  • Develop process management systems for launching, monitoring, restarting, and supervising robotic software services.

  • Design communication frameworks for reliable data exchange between distributed software components.

  • Deploy,validate, and troubleshoot software on physical bots and simulation environments.

**What you’ll need**

  • Minimum 8 years of experience with aBachelor’s degree in computer science, Robotics, Engineering,a relatedtechnical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience building production-quality software in C++.

  • Strong understanding of Linux systems, process management, networking,IPCandsystem services.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with ROS2 and DDS.

  • Experience with TCP/IP, UDP and other network protocols.

Our environment

  • Up to 10% of travel may berequired. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

  • The employeeis responsible forowning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $149,000.00 - $204,600.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.
