Job description

Based in Mountain View, CA, Cyngn is a publicly-traded autonomous technology company. We deploy self-driving industrial vehicles - specifically autonomous tuggers - to factories, warehouses, and other facilities throughout North America. To build this emergent technology, we are looking for innovative, motivated, and experienced leaders to join us and move this field forward. If you like to build, tinker, and create with a team of trusted and passionate colleagues, then Cyngn is the place for you. Key reasons to join Cyngn:

We are small and big.

With under 100 employees, Cyngn operates with the energy of a startup. On the other hand, we’re publicly traded. This means our employees not only work in close-knit teams with mentorship from company leaders—they also get access to the liquidity of our publicly-traded equity.

We build today and deploy tomorrow.

Our autonomous vehicles aren’t just test concepts—they’re deployed to real clients right now. That means your work will have a tangible, visible impact.

We aren’t robots. We just develop them.

We’re a welcoming, diverse team of sharp thinkers and kind humans. Collaboration and trust drive our creative environment. At Cyngn, everyone’s perspective matters—and that’s what powers our innovation.

About the role
  • As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer , you will be driving the design, development, and validation of all firmware running on our vehicle drive & Safety controllers. This is a technical leadership role that requires a strong systems mindset, a deep understanding of embedded software best practices, and the ability to mentor others. You will work closely with electrical engineers, controls engineers, and the broader software team to deliver robust, production-quality firmware.
What you'll do
  • Act as design responsible engineer for a vehicle program that includes controllers for: Traction Control, Actuator Control, IO Control, Sensor Control, and Functional Safety Firmware.
  • Define technical direction for embedded software architecture, coding standards, and system interfaces.
  • Review electrical schematics, direct I/O mapping, and work with hardware engineers to ensure firmware and hardware are well-integrated.
  • Debug complex issues using ARM JTAG/ETM systems and other tools.
  • Develop safety-critical code in compliance with MISRA C or similar standards.
  • Use data intense sensors such as 3D LIDARs and Cameras to create 'Virtual Bumper' systems to achieve PL=D ratings (Roughly ASIL-C equivalent) on microprocessors such as i.MX-6 series
  • Create and maintain documentation including APIs, state diagrams, and test matrices.
  • Plan, implement, and execute firmware test procedures across multiple levels of vehicle integration.
  • Own specifications for Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing systems and support test automation.
  • Establish and maintain a Continuous Integration (CI) framework for embedded software.
Qualifications
  • 8–12+ years of experience developing embedded software in a product-focused environment.
  • Deep expertise with microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M preferred), low-level drivers, and real-time control systems.
  • Strong experience with debugging tools (JTAG, ETM, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes).
  • Experience with safety-critical software development standards (e.g., MISRA C, ISO 26262).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and work across hardware/software boundaries.
  • Strong architecture and system-level thinking — ability to design firmware systems that scale and integrate well.
  • Experience with RTOS systems for safety critical applications.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD for embedded systems (Github Actions).
  • Excellent communication skills and a track record of mentoring and technical leadership.
  • Health benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, HSA and FSA (Health & Dependent Daycare), Employee Assistance Program, 1:1 Health Concierge)
  • Life, Short-term and long-term disability insurance (Cyngn funds 100% of premiums)
  • Company 401(k)
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Remote or hybrid work opportunities
  • Sabbatical leave opportunity after 5 years with the company
  • Daily lunches for in-office employees and fully-stocked kitchen with snacks and beverages
  • Monthly meal and tech allowances for remote employees
