Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer – Luna Mission | Space Technology | Dallas Based
We're working with an exciting organisation developing high-reliability embedded systems for a lunar mission, and we're looking for an experienced Embedded Firmware Engineer to join the team. The pay banding is between $100 - $200k with industry leading benefits.
This is an opportunity to work at the very lowest levels of the technology stack - from power-up and board bring-up through to firmware, RTOS, communications and system-level integration - on hardware that will ultimately operate in one of the most demanding environments imaginable.
- Develop firmware and low-level embedded software using C/C++.
- Work across microcontrollers, CPUs, DSPs and FPGA-based systems.
- Develop and maintain low-level device drivers, including I2C, SPI and GPIO interfaces.
- Work with FreeRTOS and other real-time embedded operating systems.
- Support BSP development, board bring-up and low-level hardware validation.
- Integrate and control Wi-Fi and 5G/LTE modules for real-time, deterministic applications.
- Work closely with hardware teams to debug and validate board-level functionality.
- Optimise system performance across CPU, DSP, FPGA, memory and power.
- Work with low-memory and resource-constrained systems, including smaller CPUs and microcontrollers.
- Develop and maintain software through hardware/software re-spins and new versions.
- Support secure firmware updates, including OTA mechanisms.
- Perform low-level kernel debugging and troubleshoot complex hardware/software interactions.
- Work across communications technologies, from L1/Baseband through to L3, with an understanding of protocol stacks highly beneficial.
- Work with DSP interfaces and microcontroller communications.
- Contribute to robust communications stacks, including TCP/IP tailored for real-time environments.
- Ensure highly reliable, resilient and fault-tolerant operation across all subsystems.
- Maintain detailed technical documentation and participate in code reviews.
- Collaborate closely with hardware, systems and other cross-functional engineering teams.
- Use advanced debugging and analysis tools to identify and resolve low-level issues.
Reliability is absolutely critical. The systems you'll be working on are intended for lunar deployment, meaning software needs to be resilient, tightly controlled and designed with redundancy, fault tolerance and long-term reliability in mind.
You'll be working across the stack, from system power-up and boot, through the BSP and kernel/RTOS, to low-level drivers, communications and higher-level functionality.
- 5+ years' experience in embedded firmware/software development; candidates with 10-15+ years of experience are particularly interesting.
- Experience with ARM processors, MCUs, DSPs and FPGA-based systems.
- Strong understanding of Linux Kernel architecture and secure boot processes.
- Experience with FreeRTOS, Linux and/or Linux PREEMPT_RT.
- Strong understanding of real-time execution and deterministic scheduling.
- Experience developing low-level drivers and working with I2C, SPI, GPIO and similar interfaces.
- Ability to read and interpret hardware schematics and datasheets.
- Experience with board bring-up and hardware/software integration.
- Familiarity with Wi-Fi, 5G/LTE and wireless technologies.
- Knowledge of communications protocol stacks, L1/Baseband through L3, and real-time TCP/IP is advantageous.
- Proficiency in Python and/or Bash for automation and development.
- Experience with secure firmware updates / OTA is beneficial.
- Strong debugging and low-level troubleshooting capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
Why This Role?
This is a genuinely exciting opportunity to work on mission-critical embedded technology for lunar applications, tackling complex problems across hardware, firmware, processors, real-time operating systems and communications.
You're an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware and wants to contribute to technology designed to operate on the Moon, we'd love to hear from you.
Candidates requiring visa sponsorship/Green Card sponsorship will not be considered for this vacancy.
