Job summary

Union Pacific Railroad is seeking a Senior Electronic Technician to repair, maintain, and install VHF/UHF and licensed microwave radio systems supporting voice and data across the network. You will work in the field across territories, troubleshoot RF systems, and maintain routers and video surveillance to ensure trains run smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair telecommunications facilities in your territory.
  • Work independently or occasionally with another technician.
  • Maintain and repair mobile and base radios (155-162 MHz, 5-100 watts).
  • Work on terrestrial microwave systems (5.8 GHz, 6 GHz, 10-12 GHz, 18 GHz).
  • Handle SCADA radios (200, 400, and 900 MHz).
  • Maintain routers, switches, access points, and IP video surveillance systems.
  • Perform maintenance on generators (2,000 to 17,000 watts) and rectifier systems (12, 24, 48V).
  • Maintain radio tower marking light systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair antenna and RF transmission lines.
  • Ensure RF surge suppression and grounding/bonding systems are functioning properly.
  • Utilize test equipment such as antenna analyzers, service monitors, spectrum analyzers, and power meters.
  • Diagnose issues with antennas and coax cables before involving tower climbers.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Respond to service restoration calls, often due to weather-related damages.
  • Ensure critical equipment is repaired promptly to maintain train service.

Description

Senior Electronic Technicians are responsible for repair, maintenance and installation of VHF, UHF, and licensed microwave radio transmission systems. These systems support voice and data connectivity across Union Pacific Network, along with other IP-based technologies, to provide real-time data collection.   • Able to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems. In addition, applicants must be able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text
  • Able to plan, organize, and track information and activities
  • Able to understand and apply basic mechanical principles to solve mechanical problems
Work Conditions

Able to provide your own transportation.

Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires.

Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.

Must be available to work any shift.

Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes.

Travel Requirements: May be away from home five days per week.

Willingness to practice safe work habits.
