Job description

About Us

Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems designed to restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Its platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. The company’s initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with expansion in cognitive decline and other neurological disorders, focusing on long‑term solutions for the growing aging population.

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to support the verification of next‑generation implantable and external neurotechnology systems.

This role combines electrical design, characterization, verification testing, test hardware development, and system integration across implantable and wearable medical devices. You will develop electrical test methods, verification protocols, and custom test hardware while executing verification activities that demonstrate our products are safe, reliable, and ready for clinical use. As a senior member of the Testing organization, you’ll also bring technical depth to help shape test strategy and mentor more junior engineers.

Working within the Testing organization, you will collaborate closely with Hardware, Firmware, Robotics, Quality, and Regulatory teams to support products from prototype through verification and into production.

How We Work
  • We are intentional. We prioritize and are thoughtful about how we use others’ time.
  • We care for others. We prioritize safety both for patients and one another.
  • We own outcomes, not just tasks. Our work demands the highest standards because it impacts real patients and real lives.
  • Humility is a strength. We are honest about what we know and what we don’t know. Getting it right matters more than being right.
Location

This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and is expected to work on site from our Alameda headquarters five days per week.

What You’ll Do
Design Verification & Validation
  • Develop verification plans, protocols, acceptance criteria, reports, and traceability documentation.
  • Develop electrical test methods consistent with applicable medical device standards.
  • Execute electrical verification testing, including functional, performance, environmental, reliability, and safety testing.
  • Analyze verification data, identify failure modes, and recommend design improvements.
  • Investigate failures, perform root cause analysis, and support corrective design actions.
  • Support design validation activities and regulatory submissions.
Test Hardware Development
  • Design and develop custom electrical test fixtures, interface boards, breakout boards, and test PCBAs to support verification activities.
  • Build, assemble, and debug prototype test hardware.
  • Develop electrical test systems that improve the efficiency, repeatability, and reliability of verification testing.
  • Support automation of electrical testing through scripting and software tools where appropriate.
Laboratory Testing & Characterization
  • Perform hands‑on electrical testing using laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, digital multimeters, programmable power supplies, source measure units (e.g., Keithley), function generators, data acquisition systems, and environmental chambers.
  • Build, assemble, and troubleshoot prototype hardware and test systems.
  • Debug mixed‑signal electronic systems and investigate hardware failures identified during verification testing.
  • Document test results and communicate findings to cross‑functional teams.
Product Development
  • Support prototype builds, engineering evaluations, and product characterization throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Work closely with Hardware Engineering to improve product performance, manufacturability, and reliability based on verification findings.
  • Support electrical characterization of new product designs throughout prototype development.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience developing electronic systems.
  • Strong understanding of analog, digital, and mixed‑signal electronics.
  • Hands‑on experience debugging electronic hardware in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience developing verification protocols, reports, and electrical test methods.
  • Experience designing custom test fixtures, interface boards, or test PCBAs.
  • Proficiency using Altium Designer (or equivalent professional PCB design software).
  • Experience using laboratory instrumentation including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, digital multimeters, programmable power supplies, and electronic loads.
  • Experience developing products under FDA Design Controls and ISO 13485, or experience working within other regulated engineering environments.
  • Experience using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools for test automation or data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing Class II or Class III medical devices.
  • Familiarity with standards applicable to medical device verification, including ISO 14708, IEC 60601, and ISO 10993.
  • Experience designing automated electrical test systems.
  • Experience with National Instruments hardware, LabVIEW, TestStand, or similar automated test platforms.
  • Experience with embedded systems and communication protocols such as SPI, I²C, UART, USB, CAN, or BLE.
  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions.
  • Understanding of medical device risk management and design controls.
  • Prior experience mentoring junior engineers or leading test strategy for a subsystem.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in laboratory environments, including prototype assembly, electrical debugging, and hands‑on verification testing.
  • Ability to occasionally lift laboratory equipment, test fixtures, and hardware prototypes.
